About this deal

There could be truly ancient fish of well over 80, perhaps even 100 years out there somewhere in a long-forgotten pond in the middle of nowhere! Mirror Carp are a genetically mutated form of Common Carp. This mutation makes their scales larger and more sporadic on their bodies. These scales resemble mirrors, and this is where they get their name. The mirror carp’s mouth is rather big and it enables the fish to scoop up large amounts of feed off the bottom. The mirror’s extendable lips remind one of a vacuum cleaner, and this fish doesn’t have many limits when it comes to food! Carp are most active during the night and the morning hours (although there can be local exceptions to this general rule), which is the reason why most carp anglers are using bivvies (fishing tents) and bite alarms on the bank. He added it did not necessarily imply fish were self-aware, but the findings challenged the idea that animal intelligence follows a continuum, with chimpanzees at the top and fish, insects and reptiles at the bottom.

You certainly can, even though it is not the tastiest of fish. In many countries, carp is a commonly eaten dish.

"How could fully scaled carps appear in natural waters in Madagascar?". Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. 283 (1837). doi: 10.1098/rspb.2016.0945. 20160945. The mirror carp is also a common fish in North America and can be found in many lakes and rivers in the U.S. and Canada, where it was first introduced in the mid-1800s.

Mirror Carp are fish that require a lot of oxygen in their water, and you will want to ensure that you provide them with a good air pump to ensure they are getting enough. The maximum age of mirrors, on the other hand, is not really determined. Specimens older than 50, and even 60 years have been captured and observed in captivity, but no one really knows how long they can live for! An important rule to consider when choosing a tank for Mirror Carp is that you need at least 10 gallons per every inch of the fish you want to house in it. You will also want to remember how large Mirror Carp can get. It is said that Mirror Carp kept in a home aquarium will not grow as large, but it is a good idea to have a plan in mind for them if they reach that size. An easier choice for keeping Mirror Fish is in an outdoor pond. The pond needs to be over 1000 gallons and at least 3 feet deep to house Mirror Carp.

Mirror Carp, like most carp species, spawn in the spring and into the summer. You will visibly be able to see the female full of eggs. She will appear much more plump than the males. Once ready to spawn, the females will go to the more shallow, weedy, grassy areas. They will choose water that is more shallow but is going to rise. The carp splash around, and it is said that this helps the eggs adhere to surfaces.
