And it felt different enough from them to stand on it's own to me. While I can appreciate Mr. Ebert's criticisms, and agree with his general assessment of the clichéd main storyline, there is something else at work here that I think lifts this movie above that. I can describe the rest of the plot. Or you can decide for yourself if Barry becomes a junior karate master and defeats the class bully in the big match at the end of the movie. If I supply additional information, such as that*Joe Piscopo*plays the brutal, psychotic head of a local karate school, or that Barry has a crush on a girl in his class, you might be able to intuit additional developments. Taking pity on the class outcast, Miss Chen introduces him to her uncle, Mr. Lee (Mako), recently arrived from China - so recently, indeed, that he hasn't seen any of "The Karate Kid" (1984) movies and doesn't know his role has been played before.we tried having a discussion on this in the vinegar syndrome, but people just didn’t want to listen. Oddly I feel like this movie pairs really well with Karate Kid III. This film also makes me realize how utterly lame The Next Karate Kid was, swap Mako with Mr. Miyagi and you could make a very similar movie. This is also by far Jonathan Brandis's best film, his acting in this is never cheesy, just totally natural and believable, he's obviously more attractive than a typical nerd but he really sells the invalide weakling character in his acting.
