About this deal

James Harvey keenly wrote to me just after our interview, clarifying that SAT also does not accept any “pro-Hitler” beliefs. How did Hans define “loyalty”? How did other young Germans whose stories you read in this chapter define “loyalty”? During our discussion he said: “Free speech doesn’t come without responsibility. If you’re going to say something that will wind someone up or aggravate them – then you should expect a proportional response.” After starting Students Against Tyranny exactly one year ago we have accomplished quite a lot, and hopefully that will continue at an even higher rate for the foreseeable future. The dedicated team behind this campaign group, in collaboration with activists from other youth organisations, have been tirelessly working on ways to get the youth more involved, and we are pleased to say that we are currently in the process of bringing those ideas to fruition. There seems to be a cognitive dissonance between the claims of taking “responsibility” for one’s words and then denying culpability in contributing to a hostile atmosphere.

Something I also need to mention about this disciplinary in particular was that John was only in the meeting for a couple of minutes as he had to leave due to a phone call from work, of which he’d only been employed for that same week. Not wanting to let them down not long after his first ever shift he had to answer the call. The disciplinary panel refused to adjourn the meeting, which is a requirement all universities need to follow when it comes to disciplinary procedures. Harvey keenly told me that SAT would not support ‘ethno-nationalists’, saying: “That’s not our values.” We organised student rallies, protests, virtual lectures, meetups, and outreach campaigns but none of it would’ve been possible without all of you. Everyone who supported us either financially or by sharing posts, by following, by leafleting, etc, thank you. We are far from done. In terms of what we’ve already announced, we have a Change My Mind tour in the works, a new podcast series, another protest in Cardiff, but that is just the tip of the iceberg in comparison to what is to come. This is the aim of my project. I hope to help them hold the line just that little bit longer so they dont become pressured or coerced into taking the vaccine if they dont want to, which violates their right to informed consent. John submitted all this evidence in a report to a higher power within the university, with the hopes he could stop the administration from targeting him for “wrongthink.” Because of this report he’d made, they assembled an entire team of administrators to monitor John’s social media presence without his knowledge. The entire purpose of this group was to find things they considered to be “objectionable”. They took numerous out-of-context comments made by John and twisted them to portray him in a negative light. The group’s actions were subjective and unfair, and it was a clear attempt to silence John and suppress his freedom of expression. A spirited counter-protest by the Manchester Anti-Fascist Collective, Manchester Leftist Action coalition and various workers’ unions outnumbered the SAT supporters. And herein lies the massive contradiction at the heart of what the so-called ‘free speech’ advocates of SAT argue.

He was to carry the flag of his troop to the party’s national rally at Nuremberg. He was overjoyed. But when he returned we hardly dared trust our eyes. He looked tired, and on his face lay a great disappointment. We did not expect an explanation, but gradually we learned that the youth movement which had been held up to him as an ideal image was in reality something totally different from what he had imagined the Hitler Youth to be. Their drill and uniformity had been extended into every sphere of personal life. But he had always believed that every boy should develop his own special talents. Thus through his imagination, his ingenuity, his unique personality, each member could have enriched the group. But in Nuremberg everything had been done according to the same mold. There had been talk, day and night, about loyalty. But what was the keystone of all loyalty if not to be true to oneself? My God! There was a mighty upheaval taking place in Hans. The university’s actions so far blatantly disregard both their own internal policies and procedures, and arguably even the law. Despite the fact that students don’t have the same legal protections as employees, it’s clear that John has been subjected to gross mistreatment and unfair discrimination. Unfortunately, seeking legal recourse through a judicial review is prohibitively expensive, with costs exceeding a hundred thousand pounds. This means that access to justice is largely reserved for those who can afford it, leaving individuals like John at a severe disadvantage. It’s possible that the university was aware of this fact and exploited it to their advantage, knowing that John would be unable to obtain legal justice for the unjust actions they had taken against him. The extra money will go towards extensive advertising and marketing, maintaining and the continued development of this platform. I respect your right to an opinion but I would prefer that you would not talk about this near me as I find it offensive and I obviously would like to respond to this and debate you, but if I do that there’s a high chance someone will report me and say that I said something offensive so I can not risk engaging in this conversation so I would prefer that you just not talk about it”. On the 13th September 2021, after seeing his success, UNN (Unity News Network) anchor, David Clews, arranged for James to come on his live to do an interview about his plans for Students Against Tyranny, in the live one of those plans discussed was to have Student Representatives, an idea which, for the most part, they have succeeded in. [4] Students Against Tyranny have so far got 47 Student Reps in universities stretched across the UK. [5] Not too long after this, an article was written about James by Wales Online, though they didn't mention him by name. The article was titled "University of Wales Trinity St David's warns that students spreading Covid misinformation could face disciplinary action". [6] The article states that the first year student has started a group "urging those aged between 15-21 to not get jabbed" and that the university "condemns" the actions of this student and that people should get "vaccinated." James later responds to this article by saying that he's not "antivax" and that he's instead "pro medical choice."

90-Second Survey

Sopade: Reports on German Youth” (1938), in The Third Reich Sourcebook, ed. Anson Rabinbach and Sander L. Gilman (Berkeley: University of California Press, 2013), 252. What do you think appealed to Hans Scholl about the Hitler Youth? What was the “mighty upheaval” that later took place in him? What caused it? What choices did he make? Eleven students at the university are facing a potential list of punishments, including everything from fines to total exclusion, for their occupation of university buildings earlier this year. Once the protest wound down, I spoke to one of SAT’s guest speakers, Tom Shaw, a dentistry student at Newcastle University.

Sarah Ensor is the a Branch Secretary of the Public and Commercial Services Union, who joined the counter-protesters on the day. She said:

Following the false accusation of threatening to burn down the library, John was subjected to two more meetings. During these meetings, he lodged complaints that his research had been excluded from the proceedings. Every December, there is a summary of everyone’s research, but John’s work was removed, effectively erasing his contributions. By disregarding his work, they were sending a message that his opinions and contributions were not worthy of consideration, which was a clear violation of academic integrity and respect. They want to dress children up as women and tell them they’re women. It’s the sexualisation of kids. It’s teaching them that it’s normal. You’ve seen these pride parades – it’s the public display of fetishism.”
