About this deal

Can I call this a leobiography? I think it is technically an autobiography, however it doesn't feel right to say so, since we learn very little about Joy and her husband. A year later, the Adamsons return to Kenya and are given a week to find Elsa. They are overjoyed to see that Elsa has succeeded as a wild lion and is now the mother of three cubs. However, Joy and George both agree that they will not interact with the cubs, allowing them to survive as wild lions. In October, we launched ‘Saving Meru’s Giants’, our ambitious programme to protect elephants and giraffes of Meru, including the deployment of our de-snaring Twiga Team. Most popular star for third time." Times [London, England] 31 December 1966: 5. The Times Digital Archive. Web. 16 Sept. 2013. Of the three lion cubs, Big One and Lustica — meaning “Jolly One” — were the biggest, strongest, and most vocal of the litter. Elsa, the runt, “[…] would have probably been the throw-out of the pride,” Joy wrote. She went on to say, “[…] one usually sees only two cubs with a lioness [as] another is often too weak to be reared”.

There have been many accounts of the return to the wild of tame animals, but since its original publication in 1960, when The New York Times hailed it as a "fascinating and remarkable book," Born Free has stood alone in its power to move us. We started to support the Amboseli Elephant Research Project in Kenya, to study the behaviour and social dynamics of savannah elephants. Beautiful story of a lioness, Elsa, and the friendship she maintained with her humans, Joy and George Adamson. I loved the landscape/location in East Africa and the devotion and love between Elsa and Joy and George. I enjoyed reading this, and look forward to watching the movie. When I started reading this book, I honestly thought I will like it a lot more. Yes, it must be a real adventure to adopt a lion cub and raise it. I would imagine that to some extend it resembles raising a kitten - you spend as much time as possible with the animal, you provide the food and water, you play with it, you try (usually unsuccessfully) to teach it some manners, and so on. Abbie loved reading this book , she gained excellent knowledge and facts, some parts regarding the cruelty Abbie said she wished she could help, very...We supported an ongoing project to help Sri Lanka’s Elephant Transit Home rehabilitate juvenile orphan elephants, return them to the wild and monitor their progress. After heavy negotiating the Adamsons eventually found a place in the Serengeti Reserve in neighbouring Tanganyika where the cubs resettled. The Adamsons stayed in touch with the three cubs as tourists, but eventually totally lost sight of them. Joy Adamson (born Friederike Victoria Gessner) was a naturalist, artist, and author best known for her book, Born Free, which describes her experiences raising a lion cub named Elsa. Born Free was printed in several languages, and made into an Academy Award-winning movie of the same name. In 1977, she was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art.

Some years later, Joy and George soon have to travel to Kiunga as George has been told by his boss, John Kendall (Geoffrey Keen) about a lion who is killing goats in a local village. George successfully manages to kill the lion and he and Joy are able to share a special holiday with Elsa, where they introduce her to the Indian Ocean. On returning to the Northern Province, the Adamsons learn that Elsa has caused a massive elephant stampede. Kendall states that the Adamsons can no longer keep Elsa and must find a zoo to take her in. However, Joy instead wishes to teach Elsa how to survive in the wild, which Kendall reluctantly gives her and George three months to do. On February 1st, 1956, George Adamson, the Indian-born Brit and Senior Wildlife Warden of the Northern Frontier District of Kenya’s wildlife department was engaged in an aggressive confrontation with a lioness. George, a wildlife conservationist, was forced to kill the lioness out of self-defence when she charged him. Unbeknownst to George, the lioness’ aggressive behaviour was due to the nearby presence of her three cubs. We became Secretariat of the UK’s Ape Alliance, chaired by our Senior Wildlife Consultant, Ian Redmond OBE. We established the Satpuda Landscape Tiger Programme, with a network of local conservationists, to develop community projects and save the wild tiger in India’s forests. This is a Large Print edition of the entire "Born Free" trilogy, which I have read in various editions many times. I had intended to read it yet again to review here, but find I cannot bring myself to do so. There are parts which I simply don't want to put myself through again. Plus over the years I have learned enough about the whole thorny issue of Kenyan wildlife, to make this book far too upsetting for me to read again. Later on, Elsa has three cubs. They are not nearly as tame or accepting towards humans as their mother, and they constantly struggle between imitating her actions and following their instincts. This is the book the film was based upon, the story of Elsa the lioness, hand raised by a Senior Game Warden and his wife, Joy Adamson, and later released into the wild. This would be rated five stars except that I really try to be stingy with those. The book didn't make me cry, laugh-out-loud or change my thinking, and Adamson, while she writes well and fluently, doesn't have the impressive, lyrical prose of Beryl Markham and Isak Dinesen, two other European women who wrote celebrated memoirs about their time in Kenya. Born Free USA successfully encouraged the US government to list the polar bear as ‘threatened’ under the US Endangered Species Act and prohibit the import of bear ‘trophies’ from hunting.
