About this deal

Wow! Kudos. So given that this is your first game, and that you seem to have nailed it, what advice would you give to other full-time humans? And part-time game inventors? So let’s talk strategy. After all of the players have made their initial color guess, the Cue-giver can determine whether or not they want to give a second Cue. If a lot of the players are within a single square of the chosen color, it’s in the Cue-giver’s best interest to refrain from a second Cue. The thing that first drew me to Hues and Cues was its appearance. A vast and glossy board filled with a rainbow-encompassing grid of different shades and tones. A sort of Dulux Paint Chart in board game form (or Farrow and Ball, if you’re more that way inclined). I wasn’t sure whether to play it or start a mood board for a living room makeover with it.

Some rounds we’ve all hit really close to the chosen color and other times we’ve been super spread out all over the board. Those rounds usually bring a lot of laughs. Overall despite a few minor quibbles Hues and Cues has proven to be a great game for our game groups. I’m personally not a big fan of party games and due to that I don’t own a lot of them, but I’m happy to add Hues and Cues to that small collection. Once I had a game our family enjoyed, I had a more professional copy of the board made at Fed Ex. We took the game to our weekly game nights where typically 30 or so people attend. These are gaming friends who wouldn’t be afraid to really tell us what they thought. I was very nervous to make it public, but did so at the insistence of my wife. I’m glad I did because it was those friends who really got excited and encouraged me to show it to some of our industry friends. Months later, I took my one copy to Geekway to the West… After the cue giver gives their second cue, the other players get to place their remaining piece on the gameboard. For their two word cue, the cue giver decided to say “cotton candy”. The rest of the players then made their second guesses. They started placing their first cones and the questions immediately arose — the green of an avocado on the outside or on the inside once you cut it open?I also heard of someone whose child played this game with a grandparent over FaceTime. Both players would need to have their own game board for this to work. But what a fun way to connect across the miles and across generations. A color game ‘icebreaker’ The clue you give cannot be a primary or ordinary colour word (yellow, blue, red, orange), but it can be a shade (violet, fuchsia, magnolia). It also cannot be an object present in the room you are playing. A rule of thumb is to think it needs to be something that can be misinterpreted or, at least interpreted, differently by the group.

Hues and Cues is an easy game to learn. All you are trying to do is get players to guess a specific color on the board. If they can get close to the spot, they earn points! But then I drew my first card, chose a color I thought would work well, and then looked at the board and my mind went haywire. For maximum enjoyment, I’m going to go out on a limb and recommend modifying the rules a bit, though. I offer some “situation-specific” modifications below. How to modify the rules After launching his first game at New York Toy Fair, Scott Brady talks ideas, colours – and trading on the Moon. Hues and Cues is the award-winning vibrant game of colorful communication where players are challenged to make connections to colors with words. Since everyone imagines colors differently, connecting colors and clues has never been this much fun!
