About this deal

Well. There was simply no concentrating on her Spain essay after that. Sitting at her little desk in the Palais, Sylvia kept catching the scent of dust and lavender that reminded her of A. Monnier—the shop and the woman, both—and every time she buried her nose in her sleeves to find the source of it, she found it was always elusive. I loved this history of all the writers who congregated in Paris from 1917-1935 and the bookstore which was their haven. I had never heard of Sylvia Beach or her bookstore Shakespeare and Company. It was so interesting to "meet" James Joyce and and his struggles to write and publish Ulysses, the young Ernest Hemmingway, Ezra Pound, and Gertrude Stein and Alice Toklas to name a few. Sylvia calls her shop Shakespeare and Company. Discuss the second part of that name, and Company, and the way it arises as a theme throughout the book.

I recommend this for fans of historical fiction. Make sure to read the Author’s Note which outlines her life after the book ends in 1936.The Lodge by Sue Watson, psychological thriller set in snow-blown Cornwall (Kynance Cove). #Audiobook Why do it, Fiona? Why...

The original work by Homer, through projection and interpretation, centuries later, landed up as being something completely different in the hands of James Joyce, which added an anti-Semitic, anti-Christian flair and some salacious details to the characters. Where does creative freedom ends? Just about every creation has an artistic genesis. In a recent online debate, a Swedish newspaper was criticized for publishing a satirical graphic of a Chinese flag in which the red stars were replaced with virus icons, depicting China, geographically, as the origin of the virus. It offended Chinese people all over the world. The newspaper defended their right to free speech. The graphic replaced words in expressing an opinion of a historical event. This is a charming, interesting book about the origins of a famous bookshop in Paris, Shakespeare and Company and how it came to be in 1918. Sylvia Beach is a young American, visiting Paris with her family and falls in love with the City of Lights. So begins her journey to create a new English speaking bookshop and lending library and her long time relationship with Adrienne Monnier. After it was established, many famous authors frequented the bookshop, such as Ezra Pound, Ernest Hemingway and his wives, and Gertrude Stein. Sylvia became good friends with James Joyce, who was a large presence in the novel. Sylvia Beach is a delightful character, especially knowing that she existed.Wholly immersive, a literary romp through Left Bank Paris…an enchanting glimpse of the storied lost generation through a female gaze.” No work of literature can be fully appreciated or understood without historical context. What may seem nonsensical or even offensive to contemporary sensibilities, might actually be interpreted in a completely different manner by considering the era it is from.

The book us very well written and remarkably easy to read. It is a work of fiction, though very well researched, with a keen sense of time and space that was Paris in the 20s and 30s. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves books and literature – whether you have read any of the authors mentioned or not, and also to those who want a bit of romance in their books. Recommended to fans of Paula McLain’s The Paris Wife and anyone who enjoyed Hemingway's A Moveable Feast.”The Paris Bookstore was a slow read for me. I found myself struggling to get into the novel even though I understood and appreciated Sylvias position as a new bookstore owner: The process it took for her to open Shakespeare and Company and the many hats she wore once it was up and running. The times that I did enjoy The Paris Bookstore were when her lover Adrianne was mentioned, famous authors were introduced, or when she discussed her ideas and the process of opening Shakespeare and Company. It was an interesting part of history, when Sylvia Beach opened Shakespeare and Co in Paris. In 1922, she published Ulysses of James Joyce. Absolutely UTTERLY fascinating!!! I couldn't put this book down, it was such an immersive experience into the life of 1920s Paris literary scene told from the real life perspective of Sylvia Beach, an American expat who opens the first English language bookstore in Paris and goes on to publish James Joyce's Ulysses. This book was perfection for my book-loving historical fiction soul.
