Chapter 4: The Themes of Vagabond Vagabond explores a variety of themes that are relevant to both historical and modern audiences. From the nature of violence and the human condition to the pursuit of perfection and the meaning of life, this chapter will provide an in-depth analysis of the themes in Vagabond and how they contribute to the overall narrative. I wonder how Takehiko Inoue manages to write two diversely different manga (Slam Dunk and Vagabond), yet both are awesome reads. Honestly lads, this manga definitely has incredible artwork especially with the author capturing such emotional duel battles throughout our main protagonist Takezo (later known as Miyamoto Musashi to clear his name that he killed tons of people during his youth). Although I have to admit the manga did drag out a bit for me since this is a 327 chapter read and there were so many easily forgettable characters are suddenly appearing to fight Takezo. However I wouldn’t diss it because this was still a decent read and you just get lost in just good artwork by Inoue-San. Alexander, Matthew (April 19, 2018). "Vagabond Volume 1 Manga review". The Fandom Post . Retrieved May 10, 2023. Based on an actual samurai called Miyamoto Musashi, this epic tale of friendship, destiny and the search for purpose is simplistic like a fable or folktale is but still engaging and effective. The dynamic cast of characters make the adventure and fighting even more fun because you actually care what happens to them.Regardless if it is deliberate or not, the first few chapters of Vagabond are fast, chaotic, brash and arrogant, perfectly reflecting the protagonist Takezo's extreme yet raw potential to become the best swordsman in all of Japan. The panels, though undoubtedly beautiful, are careless and carefree, almost gratuituously violent in the delivery of story. When I enjoyed the first chapter immensely, I knew this manga was something else. Rarely do I like a manga’s first chapter because it’s usually an introduction and not everything is clear. New characters, story, etc. However, Inoue delivered a gripping opening that will leave you wanting more.

I remember struggling to finish chapter 8 as I thought Oko and Akemi were main characters. I was totally not okay having a super sexy prostitute lust after Takezo, but I also wanted to see Takezo get it on. What do I really want in my life? Anyway… I finished chapter 8 and suddenly I was on chapter 45. I’m pretty sure Inoue Takehiko put some sort of spell in this manga that puts the reader in a temporary trance. I can vaguely remember my mouth hanging open through most of it and not swallowing my spit until it leaked out of my mouth. As unattractive as that sounds, it’s a natural response! This is often a quiet story of meditation and small life lessons. Some of the more complex philosophical discussions are over my head, but I can still appreciate them and I am glad they're included.Aronson, Michael. "Vagabond 6 review". Manga Life. Archived from the original on October 11, 2007 . Retrieved May 10, 2023. There is plenty of samurai manga out there, from Lone Wolf and Cub to Blade of the Immortal, to choose from. Under the recommendation of a couple of friends, Vagabond by Takehiko Inoue became the must-read as it is a historical epic that fictionalises the life of Japanese swordsman Musashi Miyamoto, based on Eiji Yoshikawa's novel Musashi. Beautifully drawn, some humor and I love how Takezo aka Musashi is well described as a protecting-loving friend and a brother to Matahachi. Vagabond is the fictitious retelling of the life of one of Japan's most renowned swordsmen, the "Sword Saint" Musashi Miyamoto—his rise from a swordsman with no desire other than to become "Invincible Under the Heavens" to an enlightened warrior who slowly learns of the importance of close friends, self-reflection, and life itself. Vagabond won the Grand Prize for manga at the fourth Japan Media Arts Festival in 2000. The following is an excerpt from the speech congratulating Takehiko Inoue: "From Toyotomi to Tokugawa. Musashi Miyamoto grew up amidst the turn of two great eras. Mr. Inoue has taken the powerful Musashi who was sometimes called a 'beast' and drawn him as a vagabond. The artist brags about boldly challenging the national literary work of Eiji Yoshikawa, even so, the sense of speed that he creates is impressive. I send my applause to the artist for creating a new image of Musashi". [40] [41] The same year, the series won the 24th Kodansha Manga Award in the general category. [42] Vagabond also received the Grand Prize of the sixth Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2002, and the North American version earned Inoue a nomination for the 2003 Eisner Award in the Best Writer/Artist category. Vagabond ( Japanese: バガボンド, Hepburn: Bagabondo) is a Japanese epic martial arts manga series written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue. It portrays a fictionalized account of the life of Japanese swordsman Musashi Miyamoto, based on Eiji Yoshikawa's novel Musashi. It has been serialized in Kodansha's seinen manga magazine Morning since September 1998, with its chapters collected in 37 tankōbon volumes as of July 2014. Viz Media licensed the series for English release in North America and has published the current 37 volumes as of April 2015. The series has been on an extended hiatus since May 2015.Aoki, Deb. "Interview: Takehiko Inoue". Liveabout. About.com. Archived from the original on March 3, 2016 . Retrieved October 10, 2021. Real-life figure Miyamoto Musashi was the most celebrated samurai of all time. The quintessential warrior-philosopher, Musashi authored A Book of Five Rings, a theoretical guide to military strategy still used today. But the path to enlightenment in feudal era Japan was fraught with peril. At seventeen years of age, Musashi—still known by his childhood name, Shinmen Takezō—was a wild young brute just setting out along the way of the sword. Vagabond" tells the story of Shinmen Takezō, a wandering young man searching to become invincibile under the sun. He does this by seeking out the greatest swordsmen in the land with the goal of defeating them or dying by their hand.

But, to bring things around full circle, it is also a long, arduous coming-of-age tale of a young, violent, severely maladjusted man trying to find self-worth and self-fulfillment through the way of the sword. In spite of himself he does learn there is more to life than competition, and against all odds he does become a legend in the process. Douresseaux, Leroy (April 23, 2015). I'm pissed at myself for not getting around to this sooner but am so happy that I am now part of the bandwagon! This first volume is an easy 5 stars! Definitely a book to mention in relation to the likes of "Lone Wolf and Cub" and "Blade of the Immortal". While this leans closer to "Lone Wolf and Cub" when it comes to historical accuracy and number of epic (and a bit improbable, but shhhh, let's not talk about that) fights, it becomes more apparent the longer the story progresses that while the characters of LWaC might as well have been cut from really badass cardboard, the characters in Vagabond lean more towards actual human beings. It still can't quite compete with the ragtag group of shaggy, original and morally dubious characters of "Blade of the Immortal", but it is promising.
