The slim metal bezel offers minimal distractions, and the feet – which can be configured in narrow (which I chose) and wide positions – offer flexibility (you don’t get this with the 50-inch model, however). Nor does it take long for the set to be assembled: slot in the feet, tighten the two screws for each foot, and you’re done. Particularly welcome is how well the sound swells forward and out from the built-in soundbar. This provides far more impact and detail than the more ‘swallowed’ effect you typically get with TVs that house all their speakers behind their screens.

You shouldn’t buy the TCL 55C715K if… The 55C735K’s pictures also have a nice 4K snap to them once the shadow detail and colour crush issues have been sorted out, and this holds up, too, when there’s movement in the frame, thanks to some impressively blur- and judder-free motion handling.

Screen uniformity isn’t the strongest either, with clouding in the corners of Bad Times at the El Royale (4K HDR10+) via a 4K Blu-ray player. It’s less of a problem during the day, but becomes fairly evident when light levels in a room start to drop. Viewing angles are better than most at this price – although, inevitably, colours lose their punchiness and brightness the wider you are.

However, this doesn’t mean the 65C815K can’t further TCL’s European cause. The TCL 55C735K’s theme of punching well above its price weight continues with its picture performance. Once you’ve tweaked away one or two preset gremlins, anyway. With advanced Hands-Free voice control combined to Google Assistant, TCL's Android TV makes life smart and simple. Adding to its soundbar range, TCL announced the second-generation of its Ray-Danz technology, in the C935U soundbar. Taking on ‘flagship’ status, this 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos soundbar comes with a wireless subwoofer and uses angled speakers and curved acoustic reflector units to create a wider soundstage. TCL bills it as the “perfect companion” to its new QLED TV models. I should stress that these colour issues only crop up with bright HDR10 scenes/image areas. Dark HDR10 shots and scenes look pretty normal where colours are concerned – although, ultimately, this just makes the excesses with bright scenes all the more glaring. The 65C815K exhibits mixed fortunes with its contrast.
