Paul compared the film to watching a painter fill his canvas, calling it a “good film” and “interesting.”

‎Something About the Beatles: 239: Get Back to Kevin

Giles Martin: My assumptions like everyone else’s was that Let It Be was their breakup album. Not really knowing much about it, that’s what I presumed. My dad was never happy with the Let It Be experience because they didn’t want to do any production on it. And he said he was getting fired to a certain degree. I suppose he was when Phil Spector took over his job. I wasn’t aware until we did the Abbey Road project that they started recording “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” just a week after they did the rooftop performance. During a break for sandwiches Harrison played the Buddy Holly song ‘Well… Alright’, followed by another version of ‘All Things Must Pass’. Chicago Tribune legend Gene Siskel gave Let It Be three stars, writing “Beatle fans will search the 80-miunte film for foreshadowing of the recently announced breakup.” At one point a tray of orange squashes is brought over. At another, they get a beer. But that’s about it: no moaning about the cold or anything. They just get on with it.

In the the Sydney Morning Herald’s review headlined “ Let It Be For the Staunch Fans,” writer Evan Williams smartly noted: Looks like working in your cubicle and staring at John every working day has aroused judicial fantasies. Evans was there for all The Beatles' greatest moments: their huge show at Shea Stadium in the US, he appears in the two Beatlemania-era movies A Hard Day's Night and Help!, plus he was with the group when they met their hero, Elvis Presley.

Or bad research. The streetlight pole has been moved further away from the crossing, though.

Giles Martin: There isn’t one. There isn’t one, really. I mean, that’s the thing about the Beatles, and one thing that’s revealing about what’s in the footage in the film footage, Let It Be is a lot about John and Paul trying to rekindle their songwriting romance. However, you do definitely get the sense that the band are very much, as much as they can be, in a sort of diplomatic situation where there were democratic votes. Prior to and during my university years I spent my summers working for the commercial photo processing laboratories Colourcel Ltd in Old Street, near Old Street tube station. In my third summer I went inside and learned how to process prints. When the print was signed off, an extra copy would be kept, in case of problems in the studio during retouching, and the modified dyes would be bottled, and used by the in-house artists to retouch the print using the same dyes as had been used for the print.

Feel free to send me updates so I can keep improving this post! April 29, 1969: Melody Maker reported 68 hours of footage was about to be edited down, “from which two films will be produced.” Giles Martin: Yeah. Yes, it’s in the film, and if there was no visual for it, I’d definitely put it in, but there is and the visual is great. So the same people that are gonna be interested in having the full rooftop performance would probably just rather see it than hear it, and the mix will be my mix, anyway, in the film. So the rooftop performance is in the film and concerts always sound much better when you can see them. In Beatle-time, the 15-plus-month turnaround from the end of their January 1969 sessions until the film’s release in May 1970 was simply a glacial pace. Then from the moment it reached theaters, Let It Be has been treated as a snuff film.

George yawns a bit while he does it, because you imagine he sees this sort of thing a lot.

The initial plan was to also film the TV special at Stage 1, with a dress rehearsal on 18 January, and live shows on 19 and 20 January. Starr was due to begin work on The Magic Christian on the 24th. It was the only one that had their legs in a perfect ‘V’ formation, which is what I wanted stylistically.” Lennon and Harrison were the first to arrive, the former with his then-girlfriend Yoko Ono. As they tuned their guitars, the musicians played snippets of ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ and ‘All Things Must Pass’. Both attempted to play along with each others’ songs, and were joined by a recently-arrived Ringo Starr on drums during a version of Don’t Let Me Down. September 1969: After screening a new cut at some point this month, the group signed off on the film to business manager Allen Klein, according to Michael. In what could simply be a coincidence, the same month also saw John announce to the others that he was quitting the Beatles. They released Abbey Road in September, too.
