The Lighthouse Stevensons - William Collins

The Lighthouse Stevensons, published in 1999, is an account of the professional accomplishments of Stevenson and his sons, written by Bella Bathurst ( Harper Collins Publishers, 1999, ISBN 0-06-019427-8). He was inducted into the Scottish Engineering Hall of Fame in 2016. [10] Family life [ edit ] 1 Baxters Place, Edinburgh Immersing himself in the islands' culture, occasioned a "political awakening": it placed Stevenson "at an angle" to the rival great powers, Britain, Germany and the United States whose warships were common sights in Samoan harbours. [82] [83] He understood that, as in the Scottish Highlands (comparisons with his homeland "came readily"), an indigenous clan society was unprepared for the arrival of foreigners who played upon its existing rivalries and divisions. As the external pressures upon Samoan society grew, tensions soon descended into several inter-clan wars. [84] Edinburgh is surrounded by several hills including Calton Hill and Arthur’s Seat. Edinburgh Castle overlooks the city, and the seat of the Scottish Government at Holyrood is close by. Originally located across the Firth of Forth in Burntisland, the Old East Breakwater lighthouse was relocated in 1990.For the Safety of All by Donald S Murray is available online and in bookstores today (Thursday 29 July). In July 1955 these two lights were discontinued (Notice to Mariners No 13 of 1955 refers) and the Dalen revolving light, giving one flash of 0.5 seconds duration every 10 seconds, was re-exhibited until further notice. The Stevenson family of lighthouse engineers have a strong connection with Edinburgh. It was from here that Thomas Smith first started his work with the lighthouse service. Robert Stevenson later married into the family, and many more generations of the family followed in his footsteps. Dean Village on the northwest edge of the town boasts the impressive Dean Bridge, built by Thomas Telford. The bridge spans over the Water of Leith on the road to Queensferry. The nearby Dean Cemetery are home to several members of the Stevenson family.

In June 1809 one of the principal builders, Michael Wishart, was caught beneath a crane when it collapsed, and his feet were severely injured, preventing him from working further on the project. [20] He asked Stevenson if he could be appointed lighthouse keeper and he ultimately took up a position as assistant keeper in 1811. [21] Bella Bathurst's engaging story of three generations of the Stevenson family is not simply the tale of the Scottish Enlightenment. It's not just the story of that time when its engineers and scientists first mastered our relationship with a still savage nature. It is also the narrative of a remarkable dynasty and its struggle with commerce and art. Leith is a thriving area of the city, with cafes and bars as well as the waterfront development, where you can visit the Royal Yacht Britannia and former lighthouse service Fingal. No longer content to be a "romancer", Stevenson became a reporter and an agitator, firing off letters to The Times which "rehearsed with an ironic twist that surely owed something to his Edinburgh legal training", a tale of European and American misconduct. [84] His concern for the Polynesians is also found in the South Sea Letters, published in magazines in 1891 (and then in book form as In the South Seas in 1896). In an effort he feared might result in his own deportation, Stevenson helped secure the recall of two European officials. A Footnote to History: Eight Years of Trouble in Samoa (1892) was a detailed chronicle of the intersection of rivalries between the great powers and the first Samoan Civil War.Dioptic lens designed by David A. Stevenson in 1899 for the Inchkeith Lighthouse. It remained in use until 1985 when the last lighthouse keeper was withdrawn and the light was automated. Bella Bathhurst has traced the extraordinary careers of the Stevensons, from the first of the lights to the last of the keepers. In sharp, inspired prose she presents a mesmerising account of these little-known Scottish heroes, of whom their better-known literary descendant remarked, 'I might write books till 1900 and not serve humanity so well.' Harbour plans represent almost 40% of the material in the Stevenson archive as a whole and are by far the most common type of plan. A massive increase in trade over the century meant that harbour expansion became a major preoccupation of Scottish engineering in general. The Stevensons were employed to work on numerous local harbours all over Scotland. Harbour work was a mainstay of the family business and to have occupied all family members during their time in the firm. Thomas Smith is buried here with his wife Jean Lillie Stevenson. The memorial can be found halfway into the cemetery, but is easy to miss. Dean Cemetery

Stevenson's rejection of the Presbyterian Church and Christian dogma, however, did not turn into lifelong atheism or agnosticism. On February 15, 1878, the 27-year-old wrote to his father and stated: [34] There have been two lighthouses at Newhaven Harbour. The old domed lighthouse is clearly visible on the pier. A giant mural at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery was painted by William Brassey Hole. The mural includes the portrait of Lighthouse Engineer Robert Stevenson, carrying a lighthouse.
