It’s a game that spans generations. Outside of families with kids, this might be a little basic for gamers that have played even medium-weight games. When seeing a walkthrough for Builders & Biomes, I hoped it would feel like an adventure game, where I could build structures or fight baddies, kind of like what most people get from 2018 release Vindication. In many aspects, it feels less like an adventure game and more a Eurogame with “contracts” to complete and actions to select. And that is ok if you understand what Builders & Biomes is before buying/playing it. Final Thoughts:
In Minecraft: Builders and Biomes , players earn points by building structures and creating large connected biomes of desert, forest, tundra, and mountain on their boards. They can also earn points by defeating mobs using weapons they have collected during the game. We found a solution that was easier than handing it off and hoping that someone would want to design and draw completed Minecraft structures. Daniel and I sat down and wrote out suggestions for each of the biome, material, and feature combination. Maybe a mountain biome’s stone “feature” could be a rail station. We could see that in-game, and it’s easy enough to think a player might build that. Maybe the mountain’s obsidian feature could be a… dance floor? Hey, obsidian was hard, and players build on their own theme sometimes! The original Minecraft took inspiration from Dutch games like Dungeon Keeper and Dwarf Fortress. While today’s version retains many similarities, in some ways, it is an entirely different game with added details and complexities.
Minecraft is a sandbox game that has taken the world by storm, literally at any time of day you will find kids all over the world playing one of the hundreds of Minecraft servers that have popped up since the game started. My kids love playing on the High Pixel server and also have greatly enjoyed paying for a separate Minecraft realm so that all of our family and a bunch of friends can craft together.
