Cook up more than 100 recipes inspired by the heroes of Blizzard Entertainment's hit game with Overwatch: The Official Cookbook.

Fun fact from the overwatch cookbook: soldiers 76’s favorite pie to share with his boyfriend was cream pieHanzo’s weakness includes the smell of Shimada Tempura, which brings a variety of sweet and umami tastes from deep fried vegetables. While the batter provides crispiness and some salt, it enhances incredibly savoury flavours from shrimp tempura. Players sharing Zarya’s tastes could be a fan of sour flavours with their meals. Whether it’s a cold, rainy day (or an RGB-illuminated Overwatch session at home), Zarya’s preferences suit tankers who like taking a moment to enjoy each sip or bite before mercilessly surging enemies. The sheer warmth of her food also hugs players with comfort during intermissions. Zenyatta (Sweet, bitter, savoury, creamy) Zenyatta – Overwatch Zenyatta’s sweet sensations continue with a vegan spin on Tibetan Momos, a steamed bun filled with spiced vegetables. Each one wraps a tight, fluffy bread around an incredibly savoury mix of onions and peas. Mushrooms continue adding creaminess as a light hint of red pepper and turmeric add some spiciness to compliment the bread. These are some of the foods which deepen the personalities behind Overwatch’s battle-hardened characters.

Spread cooked beans on your toasted bun then pile high with the meat mixture. Top with shredded cheese and pop in the oven’s broiler to melt. After a few minutes, remove from the oven and finish with the toppings of your choice. I selected pico de gallo, slices of avocado, and fresh cilantro. Yep. I read a cookbook. Cover to cover. Repeatedly. No I do not cook. Also, I do not play Overwatch, nor do I have any intention to start playing Overwatch. The lighthearted tone found in O:TOC doesn’t always play nice with some of the darker characters or more dramatic elements of the wider fiction it inhabits. Still, the framing that the book tries to create around each recipe is definitely a plus if you’re a fan of the universe and of these characters. Her place of origin in Switzerland brings out sweet and savoury flavours from a Bircher Muesli oatmeal. The recipes are the real treat here...A lot are things you could work into your everyday meal rotation."

This particular mollete recipe calls for chorizo. Most major supermarkets carry the brand Cacique and it comes in pork, beef, and soy varieties. In my experience, this chorizo is not very flavorful so I definitely recommend adding spices to jazz it up. To make the meat for the dish go further, one tube is barely enough for two molletes, so I mixed the chorizo with ground turkey. Building from the game's compelling narrative and variety of characters, this cookbook features international food and drink recipes from each hero's homeland. Each recipe includes straightforward step-by-step instructions, mouthwatering full-color photos, pairing suggestions, and more. It’s hardly the first video-game inspired cookbook of its kind but where fare like Fallout: The Vault Dweller’s Cookbook or Elder Scrolls: The Official Cookbook draw on source material that’s both rich and sprawling, O:TOC has to do more with less. A simple Japanese Tamago Kake Gohan dish combines the essentials of rice, eggs and acid for a well-balanced breakfast. It’s also where Hanzo shows a palate for sharp acids from soy sauce and mirin splashed on the dish. A Furikake Seasoning adds sesame and dried fish for extra sweetness. Each bite also comes with raw egg to tone the dish’s powerful flavours down and provide (extra) protein. The sections for Bastion, which includes such gems as ‘Bird Shaped Pretzels’ and ‘Treats for Wild Birds’, is a particularly bad offender for this — as is the final section of the cookbook, which compiles recipes for the two heroes who originate from a moon-based scientific research colony.

Zenyatta’s version of the Indian Til Ko Laddu reflects his simplicity with only four recipes needed. O:TOC shakes out to include just shy of 100 recipes, divided firstly by geographical origin and then by the character they reflect. In addition to the recipe itself, each entry in the book also comes with a bit of flavor text that connects the dish or drink to the hero in question. Garniert sind die Rezepte mit Sprüchen und Bildern aus dem Spiel sowie einem einleitenden Text mit Spielbezug, sodass auch jederzeit etwas Overwatch-Feeling aufkommt. As someone who hasn’t really used traditional cookbooks before, I had a great time working my way through O:TOC but that isn’t to say it doesn’t fall short from what it could — and what I hoped it would — be. Zarya’s love for pink is also shown through components like beets and red wine vinegar, which add tanginess flavour-boosters in her favourite soup.

Before learning the pelmeni (russian dumplings) recipe in this cook, I had never made any kind of dumplings before. Now, I’m eager to try making pirogi.
