I absolutely loved the first book in this series (and gave it 5 stars!) so I'm a little bit disappointed that I didn't love this one quite as much... We have the fated mates trope, which is a common concept we encounter in fae books and I've grown to expect it in these books, and here the mates are marked. Living in a world where women are only meant to marry and bear children, she's had a lot to deal with in her life. She's trying to protect her family, seemingly naïve and fearful, she turns out to be a great character — brave, kind and sassy (just how I like them, heh)

The pacing of the book feels so off to me and so slow. It really felt dragging and once or twice I thought about DNF´ing but decided to power my way through it.I like how possessive and protective he is of Estrella, he'd literally burn the world down for her. He's loyal and won't let any harm come to her — "Touch her and you die" trope right here.

Personally, I didn't see a problem with the hero. Sure he's low-key villain adjacent but he treats the heroine like a damned princess, keeps her satisfied in all ways, and has stated quite a few times that he would burn the world down if she's not in it. Refusing all that? Couldn't be me but the heroine is surely doing her damnedest to try. Throughout. This. Entire. Book. Yeah. Ok. This was just as bad as the first book, I mean by this point I should feel something for the male mc other then hate right?? of 5 stars 2 of 5 stars 3 of 5 stars 4 of 5 stars 5 of 5 stars What Lies Beyond the Veil by Harper L. WoodsTHE SETUP AND initial chapters were so good! I felt really invested in this world and wanted to see Estrella break free from her unfortunate situation. And then things got even more interesting once the Veil shattered and she would up on the run... up until we meet Caelum. I don't think I've ever been less excited about a MMC. what else? yes there's a lot of sex. there's nothing inheritably wrong with that, but it made me doubt if we hadn't changed genres to erotica because of how much there was, which i don't think helped for the actual plot. again, this one might be that i'm not the target audience (if it's smut i want to read, ao3 is always a perfectly fine stop as far as i'm concerned, and free. i'm not the target for erotica books) Reread #1 (May 2023): Lovely reread! I liked this one much more the second time around because I already knew what was about to go down and could appreciate it more. My anxiety was much better because of that too. Book #3 here I come! I touched my fingertips to one of the scars in the center of his spine, feeling his body still at my touch. “Who did this to you?” I asked, my voice sounding softer and more broken than I’d ever heard it.”
