About this deal

But, we never found out if Bess was really Jake & Ursula's child or Anders? I know her hair was dark like J & U and A was blond, put that doesn't prove paternity. Nice dedication for Dorothea Benton Frank who passed last year...so young. I've read many of her Sullivan Island novels; 28 Summers would have been right up her alley. Jake has been with Ursula for a long time. And he feels connected to Ursula due to her close friendship with his sister who passed away young. What did you think about their relationship? Did it make sense to you or was it perplexing? Why do you think Jake couldn’t bring himself to break up with Ursula for Mallory? How would you feel if you realized your partner has cheated every year since you have been together with someone else? Ursula didn't care except for Jake's actions affecting her career and the possibility of him becoming the next President of the USA. I admit liking it — but maybe it’s a little bit like Chinese food ( ha, which Jake and Mallory ate once a year every Sunday night).... Can’t we just pretend that we’re the only two people in the world and that this weekend is going to last forever?”

28 Summers About Jay - 28 Summers

Ugh. I haven't felt this empty after finishing a book since I read The Kremlin's Candidate last year. And Jake, oh my goodness. What a spineless, useless loser. Instead of supporting his successful wife (who is competing with men that have wives that support them), he “punishes” her for anything he doesn’t like by cheating on her. Every time she does something he doesn’t like, his response is to use it to justify his cheating. Mallory and Jake decide to make Labor Day weekend their thing, every year — No matter what. They keep this tradition for 28 years, experiencing the highs and lows of life in between each annual reunion. This includes other relationships, work, children, and grief — Timing is everything. I listened to the audio version of this book and was swept away on an adventure with Mallory and Jake Emotional and tear-jerking “28 Summers” by Elin Hilderband is a story that is captivating, compelling and all consuming. Both the synopsis and the first chapter “spoil” the story with the fact that Mallory is dying. And that her and Jake never truly got together (other than the one-weekend-per-year affair). What do you think about the story choice to give away the ending and be upfront that Mallory will pass away? Did that impact how you read the story? My guest today is Keith Burnet (@keithaurnet). Keith is a father, husband, executive and former colleague from the fitness industry - a place where I spent more than two decades of my working life. Since beginning this wonderful 28 Summers journey I have discovered some incredibly rich stories of everyday folks doing amazing things all around the world. The deeper I get into this world the more I realise that incredible stories exist all around us, we just need to look for them. Keith is someone that I have admired from afar for many years but never had a deep relationship with. Professional interactions never made way for more meaningful connection and yet, in chatting to Keith recently I realised just how much we are kindred spirits. We share a similar journey and mindset on life and adventure and I feel so grateful to have found this new level of connection with him. Keith has completed the Marathon des sables, rowed the Atlantic Ocean and, later this year, plans to cycle across North America. He has a calm, thoughtful view of the world and I absolutely loved reconnecting with him for this chat Mallory’s first Labor Day on the island brings guests: her older brother Cooper ( love him!) and his two best friends, Fray and Jake, for a bachelor weekend. A few mini-disasters and a host of selfish behavior find Jake and Mallory finishing off the weekend alone. There’s no denying their chemistry or that their newfound feelings will extend beyond the long weekend. Yet, neither Mallory or Jake is willing to make the compromises necessary to explore the possibility of a relationship. Promising instead, same time, next year, no matter what. On ode to the film Same Time, Next Year, which becomes a part of their annual tradition. My name is Jay Worthy - I am a husband, dad to five amazing kids and the founder of 28 Summers. I host the 28 Summers podcast (Available on all the usual platforms)

After listening to this book, it seemed like she FINALLY ran out of topics to write about. (Ya think?)

Need Help?

If you think the idea of desire for someone that could push someone to cheat as being romantic, or if you just love the push and pull of will-they-or-won’t they relationships, then you will probably love this book.
