Don’t get me wrong, I know it isn’t groundbreaking, but it’s so accessible. It’s fairly compact, it’s easy to teach and to learn, there are a few different things you can focus on doing, which is great as a new player, and one of those things is “laying tiles in such a way as to attract these adorable cats that are also worth a bunch of points”. Even if I didn’t love the game myself, I would still be glad it exists. My delightful quilt after a game of Calico. Moreover, if you can place tiles in a way that satisfies both pattern and colour around a particular goal, you’ll be squaring up to stitch up your opponents when it comes to final scoring as the hefty yellow point values become yours for the taking! Buttons, Bags, and Boards The setup of the forest grid and twilight and moonlight goals along with concoction cards and special player abilities in each game provide great variability so that no two games of Nocturne will play out the same. Different spatial goals and situations will necessitate different strategies and tactics to outwit your opponents in this highly interactive and unique spatial bidding game! If you can also (or alternatively) connect at least three patches of the same colour, you can sew (add) a colour co-ordinated button onto any one of those matching patches which is worth 3 points at end game. Indeed, get a button of each of the six available colours and the rainbow bonus token is yours! Because this is a prototype I can’t comment on these specific components, but I can tell you how hard the team worked to produce the copy that I was given to review. Let me just share some of their effort with you.

Calico is certainly an unusual board game, and in many ways, it’s much like marmite; you either love it or hate it. It’s Calico time… Okay, so you’ve got your cat and you’ve got your quilt. But how do you turn those beauties into points? Well, have no fear for I am here to show you how to play the purrrrrfectly puzzly Calico! Sewing UpYou make a rainbow button by sewing at least one button of each color onto your quilt. This is also worth three points. End of the Game You can earn buttons thanks to the colors on your patch tiles. To sew on a button, you must first make a group of three or more patch tiles of the same color. The shape of this group doesn’t matter. I’d recommend Catan as an alternative to Calico for anyone who wants a family board game but isn’t a massive fan of cats (or quilts!). In this addictive game, trade, build, and settle on the island of Catan as you control your own civilization and spread across the board.

scenarios in total, they specify a number of additional requirements when setting up and playing the game. Going from easy to hard, each one shows which design goals and cat scoring tiles to use. Not only that, however, but they also show which type of cats and buttons you need to have added to your quit, and whether those goals have to be met using colour, pattern, or both! And if that’s not enough, every one has a minimum score to achieve! I need to lie down after that! Or I would, if my Calico quilt wasn’t so poorly crafted! Haha Cascadia is a tile and token drafting game for 1-4 players. It involves a dual-layer puzzle that progresses over time as more habitats and wildlife are added to each player’s individual ecosystem. Players score points by creating the most harmonious spatial arrangements of wildlife, and also by creating the largest contiguous habitat corridors. If you fail to complete a design goal tile, there is no penalty (other than not receiving extra points). Cat Scoring Tiles & Tokens There are a couple of variations of Calico that are worth being aware of. 2 Player Lower Variance Variant

What Curators Say

In addition to all of this, the game comes with an easy-to-read instruction booklet that not only sets out the rules of the game but also includes information about the history of each cat that inspired the game’s creator.

Through two rounds (twilight and moonlight) players compete to collect the strongest sets of magical items like firebird feathers, creature skulls, glowing mushrooms, mysterious eggs, and rare herbs. These items have value when collected in specific sets, but can also be combined to fulfill recipes needed for concoctions, scoring you even more prestige! To score points, design goal tiles have to be completed using either the patterns or colors of the six surrounding tiles. S0, start by giving each player a unique colour coded player board (quilt) and corresponding set of six design goal tiles. Pop the cat tokens and button tokens within easy reach. Everybody then chooses 4 of the tiles at random and then further narrow this down to 3. Those get placed on the slots on their board (wherever they like) and the others are returned to the box. To set up Calico, give each person a player board and the matching colored goal tiles. There are 6 different goal tiles which give Calico some in-game scoring variety. The rules suggest that for your first game players each use the AAA-BBB, AA-BB-CC, and ≠ goal tiles, placing them in the same location on each board. However, be aware that even if you expand your group to six or more tiles, you only earn one button. To gain another one, you will need to form another separate group. Calico is surprisingly challenging as players are constantly forced to think along the parallel axes of color and pattern. Before my first game, looking at the player board with only the goal tiles to guide me, I assumed that I would easily get all of the goal tiles, and potentially at least one double goal. Cat scoring tiles are double-sided and give Calico some additional setup variety. One side allows players to earn a cat token for groups of matching pattern tiles, while the other side requires those tiles to be in specific arrangements.

Next, each player shuffles their design goal tiles face down and reveals four at random. Of these four, the player must choose three to use in the game by placing them on the design goal tile areas on the quilt board. Now, the needle sharp-eyed amongst you will have spotted two things. Firstly, that around the edge of the quilt boards are pre-printed partial/whole patches. These are sew helpful as they can form part of any pattern or colour sequence you are trying to achieve. Secondly, whilst you might have a quilt bursting with buttons and/or covered in cats, there are some meaty victory points up for grabs if one or more of your three objectives can be achieved during the game. Similarly, if patch placement has secured a pattern sequence printed on any of the cat cards, a little cat token can cosy up onto one of the relevant tiles on that player’s quilt and will score the relevant number of victory points shown on the corresponding card (and underneath the token itself). Play it just right and it is even possible to pull off killer-combo moves gaining cats, buttons, and goals in a single turn; enough point booty to make even the greatest Street Fighter fan weep into their bandaged hands! If the game ends in a tie, the player with the most button tokens takes the victory. The winner earns the “Master Quilter” badge. Variations A game for 1 – 4 players, Calico is very simple to set up. In a normal multiplayer game, each player receives a unique colour coded player board (quilt) and a corresponding set of six goal tiles, four of which are chosen at random. Out of those four, three are then placed on the marked spaces and form a player’s personal objectives for the game.
