About this deal

The Scholar line of colored pencils is known for its smooth and creamy color laydown, allowing for easy blending and shading.

Col-Erase vs Scholar Colored Pencils: Comparison Prismacolor Col-Erase vs Scholar Colored Pencils: Comparison

The performance of the Col-Erase was a big deal for me, purely based on the terrible experience I had with the Prismacolor Premier pencils. don't get me wrong, I have mentioned this on many occasions; I absolutely love the Prismacolor Premier pencils, their creamy core is to die for, however, the quality control issues are just too prominent and frustrating. The Col-Erase is the palest and hardest, followed closely by the contemporary and vintage Verithins. Not surprisingly, the Caran d’Ache is the softest, which is true of most Caran d’Ache colored pencils. What did surprise me was the Staedtler, which was the softest after the Caran d’Ache. Most Staedtler graphite pencils are quite a bit harder than other pencils of corresponding grades, so I was expecting this one to be on the hard side, too. All erased easily and cleanly on both types of paper, especially with the kneadable eraser. These colored pencils also sharpen well, but may require more effort compared to the Col-Erase pencils. The Scholar colored pencils cater specifically to adult coloring enthusiasts. These pencils are designed to meet the needs of individuals who enjoy coloring intricate designs and patterns in adult coloring books. The Col-Erase pencils have a soft lead that is easy to blend and layer, providing smooth and vibrant colors on the paper. The erasable formula allows for precise and clean erasing without leaving any residue.

The price point on these pencils in my mind are very reasonable given, their intended purpose which I will cover next. Their Intended Use – Awesome for Sketching!

While they may occasionally break when subjected to excessive force or pressure, they generally hold up well during regular coloring and sketching. The Scholar colored pencils also have a smooth lead that glides effortlessly across the paper, providing rich and vibrant colors. The blendable nature of these pencils allows for seamless color transitions and shading. However, the Col-Erase are being sold as colored pencils that can be erased and on the bases that they have their own eraser attached to each individual pencil, you would be forgiven for thinking that as I have mentioned, the eraser was specially formulated to lift the pigment, or the pigment had a resin specific to the pencil allowing the attached eraser to lift the pigment better, but this was not what I discovered. ConclusionAlso, you can use more than one color when sketching to make decisions about color and shading for your project as done in my lotus sketch. You have to work a little harder at it if you layer. You have to lay down about 4 layers to get the colors to blend, where the non-erasable premier blends with just two layers. They may require more effort and pressure to fully erase the color, and some residue may be left behind on the paper. I will be using them instead of graphite when I’m sketching or doing a small study, working out the details for the bigger project. Since they erase like graphite, why not use color instead? I LOVE the col-erase pencils for UNDER drawings and detail work. They are a harder/firmer and less pigmented colored pencil, which is why they are perfect for detail work vs. the Premier pencils. Since they are erasable and less pigmented they are perfect for under sketches for anatomical positions, portraits, and general composition.
