As well as Nesta’s recovery, we also see the development of two new characters: Emerie and Gwyn. Emerie is a female Illyrian, and is also a Person of Colour. There have been issues of representation with previous books by Sarah J. Maas, and whilst Emerie’s inclusion doesn’t forgive them, she represents a step in the right direction. Nevertheless, I think more effort could have been made to improve representation both for People of Colour and the LGBTQ+ community. Before they leave for training, Nesta remembers when she was with Cassian at the war and he says, “I have no regrets in my life, but this. That we did not have time. That I did not have time with you, Nesta. I will find you again in the next world—the next life. And we will have that time. I promise. Mor takes Cassian to the human realm to see Vassa. On the way, Eris tells Cassian some of his soldiers went missing while on patrol. An unknown scent was detected at their last known location. The next day, the High Lord of the Day Court, Helion, arrives at the Night Court by a Pegasus. Helion inspects the Autumn Court soldiers and says that their bodies and actions are not their own, but there are not any spells that bind them. He says it’s like there is a fog around the soldier’s mind. Helion also met with Nesta in attempts of forging stronger wards around the Mask that Nesta can’t penetrate.
