About this deal

I have the German 4k digibook and it's a mixed bag quality wise. The UK dvd is very soft and I had initially put it down to being shot on 16mm. The 4k does have a ton more detail though and the colours are a lot better overall so it was never an issue with the film being on 16mm.

Dog Soldiers -Fresh Meat". 23 March 2014. Archived from the original on 22 December 2014 . Retrieved 25 June 2014. When night falls and the full moon appears, carnage descends, and it’s werewolves versus soldiers in a battle for survival, asthey face the unflinching terror of the Dog Soldiers. This unapologetically brutal and darkly funny horror will drive you barking mad with demented delight. Two Still Galleries – Photos From The Film And Rare Photos From Production Designer Simon Bowles And Special Effects Artist Dave Bonneywell’s Archives Dog Soldiers was released on DVD in the U.S. in November 2002 by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. [26]Hunter, Rob (22 June 2015). "32 Things We Learned From Neil Marshall's Dog Soldiers Commentary". Film School Rejects . Retrieved 24 February 2020. What is immediately clear is how filmic this image is; the 16mm grain structure gives an authenticity to the picture. Detail is terrific, there is texture to skin, clothing has weave, dirt and grime on the soldiers, wood grain, foliage, tree bark, blood splatter, peeling paint, everything is clear and distinct, with the caveat of the inherent source softness. Werewolves, Crawlers, Cannibals and More – A new 40-minute interview with Neil Marshall, in which he discusses quite frankly and candidly his career to date. The modern werewolf genre has been a durable but malleable one, with the basic tropes proving surprisingly adaptable into a variety of different situations and narratives. That’s especially interesting given the fact that most of those tropes have little to do with traditional werewolf folklore, but were instead largely created out of whole cloth by writer Curt Siodmak for the 1941 classic The Wolf Man (although he was building on ideas that were first explored in the 1935 film Werewolf of London). Yet as Carleton Young said in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, when the legend becomes fact, print the legend, and so it’s variations of Siodmak’s werewolf lore that have become indelible in popular culture. That’s a big reason why the genre has proven so versatile: audiences are already familiar with the basic conceit, and that fact frees filmmakers to spend more time working it into different contexts. Diverse productions like The Company of Wolves, Ginger Snaps, Bad Moon, and Teen Wolf have all proven how resilient that werewolves can be, and in 2002, writer/director Neil Marshall added his own unique spin to the genre with Dog Soldiers. It might seem odd that a film released just over 20 years ago has required a restoration, but Dog Soldiers’ original negative was missing-in-action for some time before resurfacing in the last few years, in need of some fairy dust. Produced at a time when massive strides in digital film-making were just around the corner, the film (like contemporaneous releases Dark Water and Donnie Darko) marks the end of era for independent horror films, as expensive celluloid was eschewed for the new technology and, if it had been produced just a few years later, Dog Soldiers would likely be a very different looking film.

I had the standard Blu-ray edition available for review so I can’t vouch for the 4K Ultra-HD edition, but I’ll be interested to see what the expanded resolution and colour palette bring out of what is a very, very impressive piece of restoration work – the standard Blu-ray is a revelation in its own right. Marshall wrote the first draft in 1996. [12] It took six years to refine the script and acquire financing. [13] Marshall wanted the focus to be on the soldiers, with the creatures being an enemy that happens to be werewolves. [14] Marshall wanted to avoid cliches about werewolf curses or "how awful it is to be a werewolf", which Marshall felt was a trope exhaustingly used in many werewolf films. [15] Filming [ edit ] Second Sight released a limited edition 4K Ultra HD box set in May 2022. [34] as well as a Standard Edition 4K UHD set [35] and a Blu-ray release. [36] Sequel [ edit ]Audio commentary – With writer and Associate Professor of Film, Alison Peirse, new for this release. A " Little Red Riding Hood"-inspired web series, Dog Soldiers: Legacy, was announced in September 2011 by producer and Kismet vice-president, Allen, now going by D. Eric Allen. A teaser trailer for the series was filmed in northwest Arkansas over the last weekend of August 2011. Directed by Ryan Lightbourn, the trailer included members of Allen's family, including his grandmother Pat "Nan" Allen and his sister Emmy Allen, as Red. Allen also said the Dog Soldiers sequel was in early pre-production. [40] October is here and we’re all looking for films to enjoy for Halloween. With a new cinema re-release and digital release for a 4K restoration of Dog Soldiers, it is easier than ever to make this recommendation for the werewolf movie. This is one of the best, if you can go to the cinema to see it, do so. Leslie Felperin (16 October 2020). "Dog Soldiers review – gory larks with furry werewolves". The Guardian. Taste of Cinema writer David Harkin states that " Dog Soldiers ditches the drama of the original Wolfman of the 1940s and pushes Dog Soldiers into Aliens territory as seven-foot lycanthropes besiege a tiny cottage while macho soldiers fight for their lives". [21]

Reviewing the 2020 rerelease the Guardian gave it 3 out of 5 and note that despite the limitations of the film the talent shown by Marshall in his debut feature that "You can easily draw a clear line through this to his later work". They conclude that "Dog Soldiers has aged pretty well." [24] Awards [ edit ] With access to the film’s original negative, Second Sight’s release far surpasses any previous incarnation, and can be considered definitive. For its many devoted fans, this release of Dog Soldiers is absolutely essential. A new 4K restoration from the original camera negative approved by director Neil Marshall and director of photography Sam McCurdy Neil Marshall stated in an audio commentary for Dog Soldiers, that the moment in the film when Megan cuts her hand on a shard of glass was meant to be a setup for a second sequel about werewolf DNA, which would complete a planned trilogy. However, he added that the planned sequels will "probably amount to nothing now." [43] See also [ edit ]Dog Soldiers is being re-released in UK cinemas on 23rd October. The new restoration is available digitally now. Jamie Russell of the BBC gave it 4 out of 5 and called it "A rip-roaring comedy action fest that'll put hairs on your chest." [22] Sitting around the campfire telling each other scary stories, it is Pertwee’s character Sgt. Harry Wells who truly makes an impact on his men. Delivered in a way that draws it’s audience in and keeps their attention, it is perfect to set up a jump scare that comes at just the right time. The scare though does not lessen the impact of the story he tells, and many horror fans love that scene for how much of a masterclass it is, not only in acting but also Marshall’s direction.
