Tactical Intellect: Giyu always remains calm and composed and focuses on analyzing situations and reacting accordingly. When Giyu fought Tanjiro he was able to immediately understand Tanjiro’s strategy with his hidden hatchet throw. Giyu also shows good survival skills, after fighting Akaza and bleeding profusely Giyu made a fire and heated his sword to cauterize his and Tanjiro’s wounds. Against Muzan, while Tanjiro tried to fight head on, Giyu advised the strategy of stalling and wasting time until allies arrived. Water Breathing ( 水 ( みず ) の 呼 ( こ ) 吸 ( きゅう ) , Mizu no kokyū ?): A Breathing Style taught to him by the Water Hashira before him, Sakonji Urokodaki. As the Water Hashira, Giyu is his generation's most skilled Water Breathing user. Giyu has completely mastered this swordsmanship style, to the point that he created an entirely new technique within the Breathing Style and impressed Akaza who had fought Water Hashira in the past. The Tomioka Giyu sword is simply called the Blue Nichirin Blade. This follows the blade color based naming convention that the hashira use for their swords. Though we don’t see how Giyu acquired his sword in the anime the way Tanjirou does, we can assume that the process is the same for him and other hashiras like Shinazugawa Sanemi and Kanroji Mitsuri. 2. Like real-life katanas, the nichirin blades are said to be hand forged, full tang blades made out of special ores that require a laborious process to be made. Similarly, katanas in real life are mostly, if not entirely handmade by master artisans from tamahagane, a special type of high carbon steel that can be folded multiple times to create a strong durable blade that keeps its edge with ease. 5.
