About this deal

Daniel Craig worked with an accent coach for Glass Onion, as he was worried about performing a pastiche of the Southern accent he used in the first film. In his first scene in the movie, famed detective Benoit Blanc is shown to be spending the first few months of the pandemic just like many of us did: utterly depressed and killing time with countless games of Among Us. However, few among us (ha!) can say that they had a group of game partners as star-studded as Mr. Blanc. Sitting in his bathtub, Benoit has a two-screen setup, one of which shows a Zoom chat between him, actress Angela Lansbury, Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim, actress Natasha Lyonne, and basketball player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Ultimately, though, the giant glass onion that rests atop Miles’ mansion becomes an all-too-apt metaphor for the movie as a whole: Sparkling, but empty.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in May 2020, Miles Bron, the co-founder of technology company Alpha, hosts a murder mystery game at the Glass Onion, his mansion on a private island in Greece. He invites his friend group, the "Disruptors": Alpha head scientist Lionel Toussaint, Connecticut governor Claire Debella, controversial model-turned-fashion designer Birdie Jay, men's rights streamer Duke Cody, and ousted Alpha co-founder Cassandra "Andi" Brand. The five friends are delivered a wooden puzzle box to decipher to find the invitation inside; the former four solve the puzzle while Andi simply smashes open the box.On December 23, 2022, in an interview with TheWrap, Johnson and Bergman confirmed that discussions between Netflix and the creatives about a possible Blu-ray release of the film had taken place, with Bergman saying, "There have been conversations but no results yet. I really hope we can do it. We've got plenty of good stuff to fill out a disc if anyone's interested." Johnson—a longtime advocate of physical media—also was hopeful, saying that even if it does not come to fruition, he will strive to make an audio commentary available in some form. [66] Reception [ edit ] Box office [ edit ] In the end, it was Daniel Craig who, armed only with what Johnson called “a light Southern drawl,” built up Benoit Blanc’s supersleuth persona. “It wasn’t like we changed the dialogue or changed the script or anything, but just Daniel inhabiting that role and bringing his vibe to it instantly brought it to life,” Johnson says. “ And no eye patch required, thank god.”

Inspired by Christie, Johnson set out to tell a story that reflected his own time, wrapped up in the trappings of the genre he loves. “Let’s write a whodunit that takes place in America right now, and let’s engage with what's happening right now,” he remembers thinking. “Not that these are huge social messages or huge political or culture or movies, whatever. They’re largely whodunits, and they’re mostly entertainments, but just like Christie did, they’re also engaged with [the world]. In this case, [America in] the 2020s.” In addition to Christie novels, he took inspiration from "tropical getaway murder mysteries" like the film adaptation of Christie's Evil Under the Sun and especially The Last of Sheila, [19] saying: "It's structured around a group of friends, or frenemies, who all have a power dynamic with one of their successful friends. It begins with him inviting them to come and play this murder mystery game at this exotic locale. In The Last of Sheila, it's on his yacht, and everything ends up going horribly wrong. That is essentially how Glass Onion begins." [7] Johnson wanted the film's title to refer to something hidden in plain sight. He chose "glass" because it is clear, and he searched his phone for songs with the word. He decided " Glass Onion" by the Beatles. [7] The song is featured in the end credits. [19]In any whodunnit, part of the fun is putting on your own deerstalker hat and trying to guess the ending — and the culprit. But before you spiral into your very own version of the It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia conspiracy meme , Johnson has some advice. “It’s a roller coaster and not a crossword puzzle.” Lemire, Christy (December 23, 2022). Johnson wants each Knives Out mystery to take on a wildly different energy from the previous one. Just as Benoit Blanc is inspired by Hercule Poirot, the writer-director is inspired by Poirot’s creator, Agatha Christie. “It wasn’t just settings or murder methods, [Christie] was constantly stretching the genre conceptually. Under the umbrella of the whodunnit she wrote spy thrillers, proto-slasher horrors, serial killer hunts, gothic romances, psychological character studies, [and] glam travelogues,” Johnson said in his tweets announcing the title. “When I made Knives Out, that’s what excited me about the prospect of making more mysteries with Daniel as Benoit Blanc — to emulate Christie and have every film be like a whole new book, with its own tone, ambition, [and] reason for being.” Lu, Garry (October 17, 2023). Likewise, Johnson wants each of his films to have its own personality. Be ready for the third installment of the Knives Out franchise to stand out, he says. “Beyond setting, beyond bikinis versus sweaters, it truly is going to be trying something different narratively and tonally. I’m already excited about doing the next one.” Li, Shirley (November 24, 2022). " Glass Onion Understands the Absurdity of Extreme Wealth". The Atlantic . Retrieved December 30, 2022. Netflix holds the film rights to at least one more film in the series. [32] In September 2022, Johnson confirmed his intention to make more. [83] Later that month Craig and Johnson separately said that they would continue making further films in the series, so long as they were both involved together. [84] In November 2022, Johnson said that he was preparing to work on writing the third film. [85] By January 2023, Johnson confirmed that he had started writing the script for the third film, stating that it will be tonally and thematically different from the previous installments. [86] Johnson later stated that though he had approved the subtitle of A Knives Out Mystery for Glass Onion, he would like to rename the series and add A Benoit Blanc Mystery as subtitles to future installments. [87] The US director and writer of the Knives Out films, Rian Johnson, described Glass Onion optimistically as “an equal, not a sequel” at its London premiere, but this second film is no sedate drawing-room puzzle. Johnson claims that both screenplays were inspired by Christie’s work, but the new outing is clearly the direct result of the commercial success of the first. When Birdie Jay attempts to flirt with Blanc, he appears uncomfortable and each time tries to move away from her.

The budget is spent on spectacle and the hi-tech world it creates brings Craig closer to the whizzy gadgetry he played with as James Bond than to the analogue deductive tools of Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. Following the reveal of Blanc's partner Phillip in Glass Onion, Rian Johnson confirmed that Blanc is gay during the London Film Festival. [3] According to Johnson, Blanc's sexuality had been in his mind since he wrote the original Knives Out, so that when the time came to write Glass Onion he felt it was natural to write a scene featuring Blanc's partner. [4] But as the title (taken from the Beatles song) suggests, there are layers upon layers to unpeel, yet the truth at the center is also crystal clear. As an indictment of the way extreme wealth corrupts, this whole exercise is pretty obvious, and it fits securely within a series of recent satires (“ Triangle of Sadness,” “ The Menu”) that aim at some easy targets, albeit with copious wit and style. My presence will be ornamental. You will find me a respectful, quiet, passive observer... of the truth." If murder mystery is booming, then we inevitably play an important part in that. After all, my great-grandmother wrote 66 novels and 20 plays without really repeating herself or making many mistakes,” said Prichard. “But I hate the phrase ‘cosy crime’. Looking at the books with the writer Sarah Phelps for her recent BBC adaptations taught me a lot. They are not just crossword puzzles. The murders matter and are rarely excused. There are some very nasty people killed in her books, but it is not condoned.”
