About this deal

The Golden Horse from Mosky is maybe one of the cheapest Klon Centaur clones available today. But don’t let the price fool you, the Golden Horse definitely does a good job at nailing the Klon sound, making it a solid choice if you’re looking for a budget-friendly Klon Centaur clone.

All of the pedals listed here have a slightly different tonal profile and inn some cases they have very different features. All in all I'm delighted with this pedal and it has become my favourite go-to effect in the few weeks that I've had it. II think it's a bit of a hidden gem, perhaps dismissed by many because its not from one of the big name brands but it's definitely staying on my pedalboard for sure.

Rather unusually, the Sugar Drive makes no reference to the fact that it is a ‘Klone’. It’s name doesn’t reference the Klon, nor does its bright blue enclosure. It also gives you the option to further tweak your tone with bass, mid and treble contrs, and has a normal/hot switch that allows you to add more gain into the circuit. Perfectly camouflaged as a Klone, this is actually a double fuzz. Don’t miss the manufacturer’s criptic introduction to the pedal, aimed at confusing and then surprising the Klone seeker. A pedal hand-built by a father-daughter small enterprise that replicates the sound of the Klon using an in-house designed circuit board with NOS D9E clipping diodes matched to the original specs.

Bill Finnegan claimed that the hard-clipping 1N34A germanium diodes are the signature component of the Centaur's sound. However, testing by ear, as well as waveform analysis have since showed that, if anything, the effect of these diodes is marginal. The next Klon clone pedal on the list is The Zeus Drive from TC Electronic. The Zeus Drive is the company’s take on the iconic Klon Centaur-style circuit. The Zeus Drive features a unique “Fat” switch to help beef up your low end – a nice addition to a great circuit. Key to the circuit are two filter networks that amount to a clean blend. The first is controlled by the dual-gang gain control. As gain is increased, a filtered clean signal that runs in parallel is reduced in amplitude, and vice-versa. This is another reason why players running it at lower gain settings find it to be the 'cleanest' boost or drive that they've played. If the pedal demos we linked to in the galleries above weren’t enough to sway you one way or another, there are a series of videos where the various Klon inspired pedals get compared directly through shootouts: we’ve embedded here some of them to better inform your choice. Yet having said this, so great is the hype that surrounds the original Centaur, that even most clones of the pedal are quite pricey. One of the designs that most closely resembles the original Centaur, this unit uses only the highest-quality components.
