About this deal

Note: this controller is very similar to the Razer Wolverine Ultimate Edition, so I will often compare them. The Razer Wolverine Ultimate has only one audience in mind: the really hardcore, couch-based gamers. It’s not ideal if you’re sitting further than 10 feet away from your monitor or TV or necessary for those who enjoy single-player campaigns more than they enjoy the thrills of online competition. Its wireless incompatibility. This controller isn’t built for casual gamers, nor is it really designed for the hardcore crowd should they ever find themselves playing anything other than competitive multiplayer games. Final verdict Featuring wonderfully responsive controls, a wealth of mappable custom keys and paddles, and a rugged design that will survive the occasional rage throw, the Wolverine Ultimate is a perfect buy for any competitive PC or Xbox One gamer. Bumpers and Triggers are ergonomic and easier to use than standard Xbox controllers, and the grip is good because Razer used a matte paint.

The Wolverine can be programmed in part using its physical controls, but to get the most out of it you’ll have to use Razer’s Synapse software. Synapse is available on PC and Xbox One, and offers a pretty much identical set of features on both platforms – although the PC version has a slightly more intuitive UI.Having witnessed a rampaging three-year-old protest the absence of Disneyland Adventures in my games library by sending the Wolverine flying across the lounge onto a hardwood floor, I can also attest to its build quality. The controller survived the experience, which separated it from its USB cable, scratch- and blemish-free.

PDP (all the Xbox controller variants) is another suggested budget controller. I have no direct experience with it, but from the info I could get their situation is similar to PowerA. Custom high-tier controllers The standard Xbox controller doesn’t require a lot of explanations. I think it is the best choice for players who don’t need extra buttons, and I feel comfortable while playing with it.Make no mistake, when it comes to performance the Razer Wolverine is the mechanical keyboard of game controllers, and perfect for serious console and PC gamers. You’ll just have to pay through the nose for the privilege of owning it. Scuff is a very famous brand, and while their controllers are exceptionally good, it looks like they tend to break almost as easily as the Xbox Elite Series 2. Cheap and solid controller for PC The Bumpers are fine. The Triggers feel better than the standard Xbox controller, and the grip is good because of the matte paint. The controller has amazing trigger stops with 3 levels of length. The controller is only wired, and it uses micro-USB. This isn’t a problem for me, but note that if the cable breaks, finding an official replacement seems a bit difficult. You can use any micro-USB cable, however, be sure to buy a very thin one because Razer made a custom plug-in, so big cables won’t fit. My only minor issue with the Wolverine is that I found things can easily become confusing when using any more than four to five profiles. This is because the custom RGB lighting Razer bangs on about applies only to a front strip. Unlike gaming keyboards, you can’t map it to specific keys.

The main difference between the Wolverine Ultimate and Tournament Edition’s ABXY buttons is that the former has very light buttons while the latter has harder ones. Honestly, it depends on your preference, but I am mostly a fan of the TE. Since 1982, PCMag has tested and rated thousands of products to help you make better buying decisions. Read our editorial mission & see how we test. Plus, don’t forget that the gorgeous strip of Chroma RGB lighting is exclusive to Razer's svelte gamepad. We dislikedRazer provides two swappable D-pads, however, they are both average. The Tournament Edition has a way better one.

These can come in handy, particularly in first-person shooters like Halo 5: Guardians where you may need to access commands more swiftly or execute a rapid-fire without the need to suppress your right trigger. Ignoring for a moment its wireless incompatibility, the Razer Wolverine Ultimate is, in nearly every way, shape and form, a better controller than the Xbox Elite. Of course, you can play on PC also with a Switch Pro or Playstation controller, but often you will have to use workarounds, install third-party software, or manually configure each button. Steam is the main exception because there you can select the controller you wish to use, but nowadays our game library is spread out among several platforms. Now you can remap buttons, cycle profiles and do just about everything else that could more easily be accomplished on the controller’s media keys, but on a TV connected to your Xbox. We likedFor 2D and retro-style games, the Wolverine Ultimate can take a bit of getting used to. The four-button circular pad's individual buttons are a bit too stiff to precisely control directions in platformers, while the plus-shaped directional pad feels awkwardly shallow. The face buttons also feel shallow, which makes them quite responsive but loses some of the satisfying, near-mechanical feel you get from buttons with longer throws. I eventually got used to the direction pad and face buttons for platforming in Guacamelee 2 and dungeon exploring in Moonlighter, but neither aspect feels quite as solid as the Xbox Elite Series 2 or Astro C40's direction pads and face buttons. Too Pricey to Keep the Cable You can customize the Wolverine Ultimate through the Razer Wolverine for Xbox app on the Xbox One or Windows 10. Yes, the Windows 10 version of the app is called Razer Wolverine for Xbox. Curiously, the gamepad can't be directly programmed through the Razer Synapse software on PC, even though that software is used to customize nearly every other Razer peripheral you connect to your computer. This means that, while the Wolverine Ultimate's lighting is technically Razer Chroma, you can't directly sync it to your Razer headset, keyboard, or mouse through Razer Synapse, and have to manually control how its colors change. All the controllers nowadays can have issues, but it looks like the Razer Wolverine Tournament Edition is the most durable among them all, and with the least amount of potential issues. Weighing in at 260 grams (0.57lbs) the Wolverine is significantly lighter than the Xbox Elite controller with batteries (348 grams or 0.77lbs). While heavier weight is often associated with a more premium feel, I'd argue that a lighter controller after a few hours is easier to use.
