About this deal

That night, Quartets were formed, Skandar went with Bobby, Flo and Mitchell although he almost had no choice since they were the only ones who knew that he was a Spirit Wielder. The First Rider tells Skandar: “The one you love the most will betray you.” (p. 349) Who do you think he means, and why? Why does it hurt more when the betrayer is someone you love? Skandar was very slow to trust his Aunt Agatha Everhart as he initially knew little about her and then later found out she was the Executioner but he slowly got to trust her after she revealed much of her shared past with her sister Erika and how it is similar to his own with Kenna. This was complicated when Agatha was brought on to be Skandar’s Spirit instructor.

Skandar and the Phantom Rider | Book by A.F. Steadman Skandar and the Phantom Rider | Book by A.F. Steadman

Epic, unforgettable and endlessly exciting, Steadman’s masterful sequel soars even higher than her debut.' – Aisling Fowler, author of the Fireborn series

Need Help?

SKANDAR soars with magic, adventure, and pulse-pounding fun – the book equivalent of riding a rollercoaster while eating cake with fireworks exploding overhead!' – Andy Sagar, author of the Yesterday Crumb series Sure signs that the creative wells are running dry at last, the Captain’s ninth, overstuffed outing both recycles a villain (see Book 4) and offers trendy anti-bullying wish fulfillment.

Identify and discuss some of the good times that Skandar and his group of friends enjoy. When do these moments occur within the novel? Why do you think these moments are few and far between? Flo does tell Skandar: “‘I wish we could both be ordinary.’” (p. 416) He replies: “I think the truth is that nobody in the whole world is ordinary. . . . I think we’re better off trying to be as extraordinary as possible.” Do you agree with him, that nobody is ordinary? What types of characteristics might make someone seem extraordinary? Skandar cares deeply for the rest of his Family, often worrying about his Father when he left for the Island and even more so when he left his sister Kenna. These worried frequently plagued him on the Island and he would often write letters. This would be made even worse after the Training Trial and into his second year when Skandar had lied about a lot that went onto the Island, though was somewhat remedied when Kenna herself was brought to the Island. In 2022, Skandar and the Unicorn Thief, the first book in the Skandar series was published. [3] The Sunday Times called it an "engrossing tale". [4]Steadman has a vast imagination, her world-building is a joy, the battle scenes are thrilling and her characters charm.' – The Times Children's Book of the Week Despite losing his Mother at an early age Skandar cared about her a lot and often let her influence guide his life, such as when he wore her scarf on his first year at the Island. He would often get emotional thinking of her and got angry at his Quartet for even thinking she was the Weaver. Hypocritically allowing her away with this thought process when he considered Simon Fairfax the Weaver under the same circumstances. In book 2, Skandar and the Phantom Rider, Skandar if finally a real unicorn rider. But things don't stay that simple for long. Immortal wild unicorns are being killed and a prophecy warns of terrible danger. And the cherry on top is that Skandar's sister, Kenna, wants to join him on his potentially deadly mission.

Skandar and the Phantom Rider | Book by A.F. Steadman

Kenna’s desire for a unicorn of her own makes her envious of Skandar. Have you ever felt envious of a sibling or a friend? In addition to being envious, Kenna is angry at her brother and feels she can’t trust him. Why does she feel this way? What does Kenna and Skandar’s relationship have in common with that of siblings Agatha and Erika Everhart? Never have unicorns been so ferocious, fearsome and thrilling! A fantastically gripping read!’ – Laura Ellen Anderson, author of Amelia Fang and Rainbow Grey He was already dressed for his night shift at the gas station. She was relieved—some days she had to talk him into going to work, and some days there was no persuading him. But today was an easier day—the kind Kenna reported to Skandar in her letters, not one of the tougher ones she kept to herself. Skandar has a bit of a competitive personality when on the Island as he frequently races with Bobby in their flight races and to a lesser extent Amber Fairfax. He gets on best with Flo, as she acts almost as a big sister to him when he’s worried, with the same being true in reverse. Skandar was initially reluctant to trust Mitchell due to his predjudice against Spirit Wielders but the two get on much better late in their first and into their second years. When a poison tide flowing across the ocean threatens their island, Roz works with the resident creatures to ensure that they will have clean water, but the destruction of vegetation and crowding of habitats jeopardize everyone’s survival. Brown’s tale of environmental depredation and turmoil is by turns poignant, graceful, endearing, and inspiring, with his (mostly) gentle robot protagonist at its heart. Though Roz is different from the creatures she lives with or encounters—including her son, Brightbill the goose, and his new mate, Glimmerwing—she makes connections through her versatile communication abilities and her desire to understand and help others. When Roz accidentally discovers that the replacement body given to her by Dr. Molovo is waterproof, she sets out to seek help and discovers the human-engineered source of the toxic tide. Brown’s rich descriptions of undersea landscapes, entertaining conversations between Roz and wild creatures, and concise yet powerful explanations of the effect of the poison tide on the ecology of the island are superb. Simple, spare illustrations offer just enough glimpses of Roz and her surroundings to spark the imagination. The climactic confrontation pits oceangoing mammals, seabirds, fish, and even zooplankton against hardware and technology in a nicely choreographed battle. But it is Roz’s heroism and peacemaking that save the day. Spoiler Alert] At one point, Mitchell points out that “‘fathers can be complicated.’” (p. 315) Talk about some of the complicated relationships the unicorn riders have with their parents. How does Mitchell change his behavior to try to live up to his dad’s expectations? Why does Rex Manning try to stop his father from killing wild unicorns? Do you agree with Flo when she tells Mitchell his father “‘should love you as you are—not who he wants you to be’?” (p. 266) A dazzling feat of imagination. I loved every breathless moment of it!’ – Cat Doyle, author of The Storm Keeper’s Island and co-author of Twin Crowns On the day of the Chaos Cup, Skandar woke up early to see his sister lying in her bed, sad about failing the Hatchery Exam. He left the room and his dad made breakfast for them, Skandar had mayonnaise. He supported Aspen McGrath and New-Age Frost, who were allied to water. Later on, however, the Weaver kidnapped New-Age Frost, the most powerful unicorn in the world.
