The First Rider tells Skandar: “The one you love the most will betray you.” (p. 349) Who do you think he means, and why? Why does it hurt more when the betrayer is someone you love? Skandar was very slow to trust his Aunt Agatha Everhart as he initially knew little about her and then later found out she was the Executioner but he slowly got to trust her after she revealed much of her shared past with her sister Erika and how it is similar to his own with Kenna. This was complicated when Agatha was brought on to be Skandar’s Spirit instructor.

Identify and discuss some of the good times that Skandar and his group of friends enjoy. When do these moments occur within the novel? Why do you think these moments are few and far between? Flo does tell Skandar: “‘I wish we could both be ordinary.’” (p. 416) He replies: “I think the truth is that nobody in the whole world is ordinary. . . . I think we’re better off trying to be as extraordinary as possible.” Do you agree with him, that nobody is ordinary? What types of characteristics might make someone seem extraordinary? Skandar cares deeply for the rest of his Family, often worrying about his Father when he left for the Island and even more so when he left his sister Kenna. These worried frequently plagued him on the Island and he would often write letters. This would be made even worse after the Training Trial and into his second year when Skandar had lied about a lot that went onto the Island, though was somewhat remedied when Kenna herself was brought to the Island. He would often get emotional thinking of her and got angry at his Quartet for even thinking she was the Weaver. Hypocritically allowing her away with this thought process when he considered Simon Fairfax the Weaver under the same circumstances. In book 2, Skandar and the Phantom Rider, Skandar if finally a real unicorn rider. But things don't stay that simple for long. Immortal wild unicorns are being killed and a prophecy warns of terrible danger. And the cherry on top is that Skandar's sister, Kenna, wants to join him on his potentially deadly mission.

She was relieved—some days she had to talk him into going to work, and some days there was no persuading him. But today was an easier day—the kind Kenna reported to Skandar in her letters, not one of the tougher ones she kept to herself. Skandar has a bit of a competitive personality when on the Island as he frequently races with Bobby in their flight races and to a lesser extent Amber Fairfax. He gets on best with Flo, as she acts almost as a big sister to him when he’s worried, with the same being true in reverse. Skandar was initially reluctant to trust Mitchell due to his predjudice against Spirit Wielders but the two get on much better late in their first and into their second years.When a poison tide flowing across the ocean threatens their island, Roz works with the resident creatures to ensure that they will have clean water, but the destruction of vegetation and crowding of habitats jeopardize everyone’s survival. Brown’s tale of environmental depredation and turmoil is by turns poignant, graceful, endearing, and inspiring, with his (mostly) gentle robot protagonist at its heart. Though Roz is different from the creatures she lives with or encounters—including her son, Brightbill the goose, and his new mate, Glimmerwing—she makes connections through her versatile communication abilities and her desire to understand and help others. When Roz accidentally discovers that the replacement body given to her by Dr. Molovo is waterproof, she sets out to seek help and discovers the human-engineered source of the toxic tide. Brown’s rich descriptions of undersea landscapes, entertaining conversations between Roz and wild creatures, and concise yet powerful explanations of the effect of the poison tide on the ecology of the island are superb. Simple, spare illustrations offer just enough glimpses of Roz and her surroundings to spark the imagination. The climactic confrontation pits oceangoing mammals, seabirds, fish, and even zooplankton against hardware and technology in a nicely choreographed battle. But it is Roz’s heroism and peacemaking that save the day.
