About this deal

For me, Sonicare wins because of battery life primarily. With up to 3 weeks on most models, that covers most people for more than enough time when travelling. Just take the brush and no charging stand. With Oral-B, even with the most premium brush, you may need to consider taking a charger for a 2 week holiday. If you want a good Sonicare toothbrush that will get the job done without breaking the bank, we recommend the ProtectiveClean 4300. Both are better than using manual toothbrushes. Pitchika et al published the results of an 11 year study in 2019. They proved that powered toothbrushes were effective in reducing the probing depth for people with gum disease. This is the distance between the top of the gum and the tooth – a smaller gap indicates better gum health. They also found that people using electric toothbrushes retained more teeth.

Overall, the Philips Sonicare line of brush heads is very strong and they offer a wide variety to choose from. They are top-of-the-line in terms of performance and quality. Sonicare Series 3 (left) vs Series 2 (right) brush heads We hope that our 4300 will last for several years. The warranty is good for two years, and we know that Philips honors their warranty because we had a problem with our DiamondClean Smart model, and they took care of it immediately. This is actually the cheapest brush in the ProtectiveClean range and the one we rate as best value for money, all things considered. Oral-B’s iO range is quieter than most other Oral-B models, but it is still on average about 10 decibels louder than Sonicare. A normal clean lasts for 2 minutes and you should spend 30 seconds cleaning each of the 4 quadrants of the mouth. Most Oral-B and Sonicare brushes have both timers built in. The 30 second pacer is a pause in the brush head motion that in turn changes the sound emitted from the brush.

I know that in the past, when I tried to find replacement brush heads for my Sonicare, I just looked in the local electronics store and tried to find the most brush heads for the best price without worrying which ones they were. I was surprised to notice that I had bought Whitening brush heads without even noticing. I do hope that this article has explained why some may favour Oral-B for reasons like budget, whilst Sonicare might be the best choice because of the battery life. The 5100 offers 3 modes: clean, gum care and white. It has two buttons allowing you to easily switch between these modes to find the one that you like the best. It also comes with 2 W2 Optimal White brush heads, which is nice since Sonicare brush heads are some of the most expensive on the market. 6100

At the time of writing both Sonicare and Oral-B have about 15 different models each in their ranges. Despite its dark exterior, which we were afraid would collect toothpaste scum, the handle washes off easily and still looks new after months of use. It’s a bit like having a gas or electric heating in your home. Both can heat your home but they do so in slightly different ways. Oral-B do offer a better warranty, 2 years as standard with an optional 3rd year if you register online. This shows confidence in the product that Sonicare does not. Below you can find similar Sonicare brushes that we have compared to one another, plus some that we have compared to their Oral-B equivalents.

How important this is will depend on your routine. It is safe to leave either brand of brush on charge for a prolonged period of time but for frequent travellers, the extended life of the Sonicare may be preferred. This is where the Sonicare lineup gets a bit strange. Notice right away that there is a DiamondClean series and a DiamondClean Smart series, and if you look these brushes up, you will notice a huge difference in price. This is because they really are brushes of a different bristle. What propels Sonicare forward is BrushSync, which I explain in detail here, but essentially it is a 2 part system that alerts you when it is time to change your brush head and selects the most suitable cleaning mode, based on the brush head fitted to the handle.

Typically I do not create detailed comparisons for cross-manufacturer brushes, however, I have compared the two flagship models in my Oral-B iO vs 9900 Prestige post.

Find in store

Overall, the Sonicare is one of the more costly brushes to own, especially if you are buying genuine Sonicare brush heads from a local store. The good news, however, is that they are readily available and easy to find! Conclusion They both have a 2 minute timer, quad pacer, pressure sensor and rechargeable battery with at least 2 weeks of battery life. They offer the most desirable features and benefits of an electric toothbrush without costing a fortune. We love the comfortable, stylish handle that is ergonomic and simple to use. The brush has two intensities to choose from which is enough for most users. So now you see how confusing this is. The DiamondClean and DiamondClean Smart are not the same brush, and once you add the “smart” behind the name, the price basically doubles. Other research, such as that by Strate et al also agrees. They conclude “Based on the findings of this single-use clinical evaluation, the action of the oscillating/ pulsating power toothbrush is more effective at plaque removal than a high frequency power toothbrush.”.

Philips charges an arm and a leg for replacement brush heads for this type of brush (about 10 euros apiece) but you can find reasonably priced generics that might make it worth giving it a try. The weirdest thing is that the standard DiamondClean does not give you access to the Philips Sonicare App. Only two brushes do that, the 7300 and the final brush in the Sonicare line—the DiamondClean Smart. This is very cutting edge and does work. However, Sonicare toothbrushes offer a similar thing, with less prominent marketing and actually, in my opinion, is implemented better from a user perspective. Some people complain that the brush is light and it feels cheap, but we think that the lightness is a welcome benefit of improved technology. It is noticeably lighter than previous generations of Sonicare, and this makes it less cumbersome to hold and improves the whole brushing experience. We will update you after long-term testing to see if quality is an issue, but so far it is doing fine! Brushing experience The next model in the Sonicare line up is a one-off. There is only one model that gets the “ExpertClean” moniker, the 7300 (HX9611). Charging is done using the included induction charger which plugs into a wall outlet. One complaint we had for most of these brushes is that the charging cord is a bit short and this one is only 100 cm (40 inches). Electric toothbrush charging test results
