About this deal

That would mean if you’re supposed to use a “five gallon” nursery pot, your plant actually only needs the 3. However, since living flower arrangements are crowded, they tend not to have as much longevity and often have more disease problems than traditional plantings.

While they normally only hold 3 quarts (3 L) of soil (using liquid measure), they are still considered to be 1-gallon (4 L.The number of plants you use can be adjusted up or down by considering the vigor and final size of the plants. The photo below was taken at the end of October and the container was planted at the end of September. For 5 plants in a semi-circular planter, you will most likely put one plant in the front, two plants in the middle on either side of the first plant, and the last two plants at the back of the planter close to each side (below, left). Now that you've determined how many plants to use in your container, it is time to start placing them in the planter. First, you’ll certainly encounter differing opinions on the matter since asking 12 “expert gardeners” means you’ll get at least 13 conflicting replies.

Generally, if you are using 3 plants in a semi-circular container, you would plant one in the middle at the front of the container and the two off-set to either side at the back of the container (below, left). If your container didn’t come with its volume labeled, you can measure it yourself by filling it within 1-3 inches of the brim with water or potting soil and then using your largest kitchen measuring tools to find out how much it holds. Also,8 out of 9 ducks declare this post to be wonderfully engaging in spite of its non-sexy topic, “choosing the right nursery pot sizes for various plants. In school, they often mixed up the measurements, sometimes using the metric system, and sometimes the Imperial units…we then had to choose one or the other (they stressed using the SI system as most countries have adopted the Metric System due to it’s simplicity using factors of ten). If your container has no volume listed, you can figure out the volume by measuring the amount of soil you can put in it using your largest kitchen measuring tools. As with other pot size nomenclature, however, a specific number on a pot at one nursery may have a slightly different volume than at another nursery. All three are common sizes sold at nurseries and vary in volume capacity based on their other dimensions.
