About this deal

The Pro Co BPBQXF-10 is a balanced cable with a female XLR connector on one end and a ¼-inch male TRS connector on the other.

In comparison, unbalanced cables are more likely to pick up noise and electrical interference from nearby equipment. In this case, you are not only losing precious sufficient time to achieve results; you also worry about the stress you encounter in the process. In this way the cable screen will provide a useful degree of RF protection, although it isn't as good as it could be. Headphone impedances vary from around 8 Ω to 600 Ω, with those at the higher end of this range referred to as high impedance headphones. Quarter inch TRS Stereo Cable, designed to connect pro audio gear and DJ equipment such as studio monitors, mixers, amplifiers, and similar devices with balanced phone jacks.

They have 3-pin connectors—one pin each for the positive and negative signals, and one pin for ground—and are used for connecting balanced microphones and line level signals to audio interfaces and other equipment. A balanced audio signal consists of 2 versions of the one signal (normal + inverted), so in essence balanced audio is 2 individual signals, it's just that these are combined by the input device to create one 'noiseless' signal. A balanced connection can help reduce noise from electromagnetic interference by using a technique that sends two copies of a signal 180 degrees out of phase with each other. Trying to mix music on speakers which are really intended just to listen to music for enjoyment will lead to all sorts of issues.

Since much of the world had switched to the metric system by the time these smaller jacks were created, we now have to deal with the mixed units of measurement of the 1/4″ phone jack from the 1800’s and the modern metric computer audio plug. A balanced connection uses a balanced cable and has a ground reference, while an unbalanced connection uses an unbalanced cable and does not have a ground reference. These use a transformer again to balance the signal and isolate the source and destination grounds but, like DI boxes, the good ones are quite expensive. Determine if a balanced or unbalanced connection is needed and choose the appropriate cable for the job.
