They are all hiding from their past, and the lies they tell are to protect themselves from society, the church or the law.

Company of Liars by Karen Maitland | Waterstones

Someone decided to market this book as a "reinterpretation of Canterbury Tales", but as others have remarked, I don't see the similarity beyond the basic concept (pilgrims in 14th century England). guest author is Karen Maitland, author of medieval thrillers like Company of Liars, The Owl Killers and The Gallows Curse.Narigorm reminded me of the female character (Rosalind) out of In The Woods who manipulated her family and people around her. The fortune teller, a peculiar child, reads runes, and she foretells of impending malevolent events. I had read several reviews on Goodreads complaining about the ending before I even picked up the book, so all through the last chapter I kept thinking Whew! I don't want to spoil it for anyone but there were so many twists that I had to keep reading to find out what was coming next.

in " The BookBrowse Review" - BookBrowse's membership magazine, and in our weekly " Publishing This Week" newsletter. If viewed as manifestations of Camelot's troubled psychosis (and perhaps as metaphorical instead of literal) those aspects of the book I disliked actually add power to the story. The second book I've read by this author in as many months, this was just as enjoyable and satisfying as The Owl Killers.I was warned to not read the last page by my GR buddy Hanneke but of course I did not listen and in this instance it was ok (often in my case it is not) as the ending worked very well for me but I can understand how it would not work for others.

They all heard the wolf because they had all lied, and in that all nine were cursed and would face death unless someone is able to end the curse. It has an intriguing cast of characters, about each of whom you learn through the story and through the stories they tell. I personally think this is a gross misrepresentation of Company of Liars as there is very little to connect both works beyond their Medieval setting. This happens on a Saturday in early June and is precisely the sort of confrontation you might expect at the end of a novel.

star rating rounded off to 2 was the fact that I loved the way the whole group came together and some of their story telling was fantastical in nature. Maitland is brilliant at bringing the sights, sounds and smells of the 14th century to life, and the cast of characters was fantastic; I imagine it must be very hard to make each member of such a large group distinctive, but every one of the band of travellers was almost immediately memorable. If not, then why does she so ardently refuse to submit evidence obtained by her biographer and new friend, Larry Evans, that she knows might spare her the executioner’s needle?
