If you decide to read it, keep in mind that it's a short story oriented for children, so please, don't harm the rating of this sweet book just because you were expecting "Neil Gaiman, the great mind behind Sandman and American Gods". The tale is certainly “absurd“, but it’s mostly a random series of a events that feel like the author wrote the book in one sitting without actually developing an interesting story. Thank god for Skottie Young, his expressive and original style was the thing that kept me turning the pages.Chris Riddell's wonderful illustrations add depth and complexity, leaving all sorts of 'clues' to Dad's story around the family home as he unravels his tale. It involves a stegosaurus in a hot air balloon, space aliens that want to redecorate our planet, a vengeful volcano god, and some pirates and piranhas. FORTUNATELY, THE MILK is absurd, Skottie Young's illustrations are action-packed and wacky, and the result is a goofy crowd-pleaser.

Two kids are left home alone with dad for a weekend while scientist-mom is at a conference (unexpectedly great reason for mom to be gone for the week! Not so, insists Dad, who proceeds to explain exactly what happened while he was out getting the milk. The journey first takes them back a thousand years, to a jungle inhabited by angry volcano-god (Splod) worshippers. After he bought the milk, he heard a noise (" thummthumm") coming from a silver disc hovering above Marshall Road, and he was sucked up into it.I looked high and low for Neil's book, but all that was there were stacks of Paranormal Romance as far as I could see. The audiobook's narration was made by Neil Gaiman and I thought that this was extremely well done and amused.
