About this deal

As mentioned above, it’s structured differently to the final released version of the film, but the new footage doesn’t improve the film very much, in my opinion. Initially directed by special effects legend Kevin Yagher before removing his name from the final film and attributing it to the notorious Alan Smithee, Hellraiser: Bloodline is a disaster.

Nice upgrade over the previous Arrow boxset, which was pretty grain heavy in particular indoor scenes. Audio commentary with director Anthony Hickox and actor Doug Bradley – Only viewable with the Unrated cut of the film, this archival commentary track from 2004 is a fun one. While my favourite of these is Candyman, one can’t help but find the success of Hellraiser fascinating. Frank (Sean Chapman) is another villain that feels so overdone that he makes Julia feel normal, and the re-dubbing of his voice with another actor’s that never quite feels like it matches only adds to the odd feel of him on the screen. Under the Skin: Doug Bradley on Hellraiser III – An archival interview with Doug Bradley talking about his experiences on Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth.

He discusses the original concepts that ended up unused and his working relationship with director Anthony Hickox. Similar to the first film, the special effects work here is phenomenal and Randell’s direction feels perfectly in line with what Barker established with Hellraiser. My main issues with the film lie with how little it really carries over from what was established in those first two entries, which work incredibly well as a back-to-back double feature. The plot has far too many holes and dead ends and raises more questions that it answers, thanks in no small part to the removal of 30 mins of footage from the first cut of the film that caused director Kevin Yagher to walk away from the final film – the relationship between Angelique and Pinhead is now woefully ill-defined and makes little sense, their interesting old school/new school versions of hellish ideologies and their conflict that results now little more than a few scattered lines of dialogue; the lack of focus now on the second box also undermines much of the hunt through time of the Merchant family; and the final act back in the 22 nd century simply didn’t have the budget to realise it as anything other than a very cheap looking stalk n’ slash denouement, with little of a finale to Merchant, Angelique and Pinhead’s centuries spanning storyline. Now his former lover Julia (Clare Higgins) must kill to make him whole again; but the Cenobites want Frank back, and there’ll be hell to pay when they find him. It’s a great look-back on the film and it’s troubled production and out of the commentaries included on this release, it’s by far the most revealing. However the new features on the first film’s disc take an interesting look into Barker and what his work meant to people and it’s a lovely approach to take rather than regurgitate the same talking heads talking about the same film again.
