This is the first published book in the Practical Magic series and the one I recommend you read first. Funny, haunting, and shamelessly romantic, Practical Magic is bewitching entertainment — Alice Hoffman at her spectacular best. The Aunts were great and I loved having them come to Sally’s house, again having them come to the suburbs, it was truly great, and such a different vibe than I expected after seeing the movie first. The two's bond became stronger when Gillian offered to make her more noticeable, cutting and dying her hair like her's.

They break the Owens curse, exorcising Jimmy's spirit and allowing the coven to exile him permanently. Some stories begin at the beginning and others begin at the end, but all the best stories begin in a library.

It left me feeling good with no unanswered questions and true to Hoffman’s style, was a page-turner until the final word.

It looks like a real house that was built in the 1850s, but it's really just an "architectural shell" that took 8 months to build and was (sadly) destroyed after filming was over. Visnjic, of course, got the part and the character was changed to Jimmy Angelov, an Eastern European, to better work with Visnjic's Croatian heritage. I’d forgotten the movie was based on a book, but I have to admit, I didn’t expect the cover — it kind of threw me. Abandoned as a baby and cared for by Hannah Owens, Hannah sees that Maria has a gift and teaches Maria everything that she knows about the “Nameless Arts. A real witch consulted on "Practical Magic" and later threatened to curse the movie, according to the film's director.

Gillian unexpectedly tells Sally she has become involved with a dangerously abusive man named Jimmy Angelov.After Hannah dies, Maria reunites with her birth mother, who practices dark magic, and then lands in Curaçao as an indentured servant. The scene where the women hold an exorcism to rid Gillian of Jimmy's spirit was an "intense" one to shoot, according to director Griffin Dunne. The Red Garden, published in 2011, is a collection of linked fictions about a small town in Massachusetts where a garden holds the secrets of many lives.
