About this deal

Using the skills and materiel earned at great cost during the Civil War, the Spanish Maquis fought not only to liberate their own homeland but also to support the neighboring French under the Nazi-backed Vichy government. Will you be able to Resist General Franco as part of the Spanish Marquis, or will you succumb to failure. This game is purely cards and therefore I feel that a little more could have been done to ensure that the cards themselves were of a good quality. You are an investor who teams up and creates a company with one of the exciting, visionary inventors. The player starts with a deck of 12 Maquis, either randomly chosen from the available 24 or drafted at setup using a simple “flip two, keep one” method.

Their acts of resistance carried on long beyond the end of World War 2, finally dissolving during the 1960s. Resistance is far from futile in this deck-management game about defeating Spain’s Francoist dictatorship. is a brilliantly simple game design and, thanks to evocative artwork from Spanish comic artist Albert Monteys, brings the history of the Spanish Maquis ongoing guerilla battle against the Francoist regime to life. Each of these missions come with a number of facedown enemies which will have varying abilities and effects that come into play when you to attempt to complete the mission. Plan actions allow players to draw a card, discard spies, flip enemies at a mission, and provide several other benefits. This is something that could have been easily fixed and would give the game more of a portability aspect. You may play Maqui cards and execute Plan actions on their cards prior to choosing the mission you are about to attempt. There are times when you realize too late that a Mission is out of reach and all you can do is try to mitigate the damage.

Unfortunately, revealed Maquis are removed from your deck, and you likely won't be able to use them for the rest of the game.I don’t know about you, dear reader, but the amount of time spent on 20th century Spanish history in my history classes throughout my educational career was, to be charitable, limited. Some of those who opposed Franco’s horrific dictatorship became part of the Maquis: guerilla fighters working to destroy his iron grip on the nation. does have some minor deck-building elements, it is primarily a "deck-destruction" game in which you have to manage your deck, balancing the decision of defeating the immediate threat with trying to move on to the next mission. Here you clean up your played cards, draw a new hand, and make one final end-game determination before the next round – if you have a full hand of spy cards (you start with three, but more can be added throughout the game), you lose.
