The new Stream Deck + from Elgato is the latest in their line up of shortcut and macro enabled controllers, originally built for streamers but that have become incredibly popular as video editing and colour grading peripherals.

This combination of a huge range of keys (and modifiers) and the person’s memory is tough to beat for speed and efficiency. Personally, I like the compact nature of the Stream Deck, the ability to create responsive custom profiles per app and to create ‘folders’ of commands within those profiles, means that there are effectively an infinite number of buttons, as long as you don’t mind navigating through layer sets. For example, auto switching between an Edit page profile and Color page profile in DaVinci Resolve whenever you switched pages.Unfortunately, the Stream Deck user experience is still a “you get out of it what you put into it” situation, which isn’t terribly attractive for anyone who doesn’t have the time to troll the Elgato Reddit or experiment with different plug-ins. Even better, the Touch Portal program supports OBS and XSplit integration, so you should be able to quickly get your current streaming setup working in sync with your phone.

To my way of thinking the X-Keys are not a good option as you have to cut out paper labels for each key to know what they are assigned to and therefore they can’t update with a change of context, and so it’s just another keypad. I did some test streams and, while I didn't have a real audience to control, the functionality worked as it should. The right-side bar is home to a list of services and software you may use for streaming, pre-loaded with the most popular ones.Customising a button is as simple as dragging an action from the righthand side to a button placement and then configuring it’s settings in the lower portion of the screen. Using Twitch as the main example, the options include playing an ad, putting the chat in slow or subscribers-only mode, creating a clip from your recent gameplay, and more.

With the Touch Portal applications on iOS, Android, Mac, and PC, you can have access to a similar suite of features that you’d get on the Stream Deck, and the full version of the program gives you unlimited pages and all the commands you need to manage your stream from your phone. To use these profiles on your own machine you may well need to update some of the keyboard shortcuts per app, that the key’s fire to whatever you’ve set them to in your own app. Other than that it’s pretty much the same, but if 15 buttons meant you were creating a lot of layer sets, then this could be the answer.
