About this deal

It’s difficult to create stories that plug directly into the looping logic of the minds of very young children that are also smart and engaging enough for adults in charge of bedtime reading. It is a priority for CBC to create products that are accessible to all in Canada including people with visual, hearing, motor and cognitive challenges. Born in Hawaii and raised in Toronto, he attended the Ontario College of Art and Design, where he studied illustration, sculpture and f ilm. But I think it's still an important message; even if the way it's delivered isn't the standard happily ever after. Inside this elegant, horse-drawn establishment, a feathery cook works the grill, serving up tasty dishes for shift-workers and opera-goers alike: a mince pie for Fox, a ham sandwich for Badger and puddings for little Possums.

I think this would be great to use as part of a discussion with children around differences we all have and how it doesn’t matter, we should all learn to love ourselves as we are, because we are perfect. They learn to live together in the big outside world and work together to overcome the difficulties they have due to their differences. This endearing picture book, with graphite and digital illustrations, will rouse justice-minded children to action with its reminders of the important things in life. Barnabus is an entirely fictional character, yet one feels attached to him and concerned for his welfare… The Barnabus Project is a book with wide appeal.Dreaming of seeing the outside world, he's planning an escape with the help of the other Failed Projects. The Fan brothers' second picture book, Ocean Meets Sky, centers on the magical spot between sky and sea.

This strange SFF type of story will evoke many emotions in you as Barnabus and his friends attempt to achieve their freedom. We worked on completing this template over several days - I re-read the story to the class each time we worked on it. In the Fan brothers’ hands, the result feels like a happy amalgam of Jules Verne, Maurice Sendak, the Moomins, and Monsters, Inc.It’s going to be a definite hit with children and I personally cannot wait to get a copy of this book to share with my students. The artwork, needless to say, was absolutely beautiful, and I enjoyed perusing these pages, poring over everything from the decorative endpapers to the detailed scenes with all the projects on the shelf, in their bell jars.

The statement that struck me the most and that's also applicable to The Barnabus Project is: "When Terry and I were both kids, we collected comic books and we loved superheroes.

The text and illustrations mesh wonderfully to convey the drama of the escape and the critical roles teamwork and friendship play in the animals’ success. The story’s exploration of his longing to be free paired with the book’s always timely message of acceptance gives The Barnabus Project mass appeal and a timeless quality. This is a great message for young readers; they should be proud of who they are and should celebrate their differences.

Born in Hawaii and raised in Toronto, he attended the Ontario College of Art and Design, where he studied illustration, sculpture, and film. The book is so well-executed that the reader feels saddened by the glum prospects that lay ahead for Barnabus in the lab. The Fan brothers ( The Night Gardener) switch easily between fantasy elements (furry aliens with glowing eyes lurk in Chris’s bedroom) and documentary images. We have been working really hard on our reading strategies lately - visualizing, determining importance, big idea (author's message), and summarizing. The Barnabus Project is the most curious, imaginative tale, beautifully illustrated with mysterious underground labs, intricate secret tunnels and captivating glass bell jars lined on a shelf with the most wonderful creatures underneath. The book follows their adventures as they dare to break free and find a place in the world, imperfections and all. The green rubber suits want to recycle the failed projects and turn them into perfect pets but Barnabus and his friends dash to freedom to find a world where they can be accepted for who they are. It almost felt like it was just out there to set it up for the series or movie or something that's coming next. In this book, we are introduced to the adorable creation that is Barnabus, a half mouse and half elephant creation that has been labelled a Failed Project.
