The Key is a dual timeline story as we are taken back to a day in 1956 when Ellen Crosby arrived at Ambergate County Lunatic Asylum as a student nurse reporting for her first day of duty. But it is into the second part of the book where it all starts to fall apart, leading up to the cliche-fest that is the chapter titled “Accepting a Higher Power.The next day, Ellie mentions something about a man who makes the girls do things they don't want to do. This one is a loser, a disappointment and the end is bad enough to argue for a refund (stealing from your readers is wrong). The paragraphs are reduced to only one or two sentences long, and the sentences to maybe three words. The Key is a novel I received a few months back from Headline Review thanks to a shout out from my fellow book blogger Kate Noble over at https://thequietknitterer. The conversation among the male officials )and I am a male so I know the implications) strongly suggested that the poor girl had been murdered in prison (I don’t believe that she committed suicide because she had received those supporting letters and, face it, convicted murderers are viscous and really hate child murderers).
