We are even invited to empathize with the book’s chief villains, the three generations of Americans all known as Abner Brown. In her zeal to educate Kay on the finer points of Latin grammar, Sylvia Daisy has even taken away all of Kay’s toys. It is the prose equivalent of a painting by Marc Chagall; remarkably, it even does away with chapters, the narrative slipping like water through the fingers of convention. John Masefield threaded a number of common themes through a series of his books; even those novels aimed at children shared places, people and storylines with some of his adult novels. Two of the greatest children’s books ever written’ – The Times on Box of Delights and The Midnight Folk. He is aided in his quest by the Midnight Folk, an association of Talking Animals, Living Toys, and other fantastic creatures. Kay Harker has various adventures—sailing on the high seas, swimming with mermaids, flying on broomsticks. Very good indeed in the scarce dustwrapper which is very good, lightly spotted on rear panel and flaps, slightly frayed at head of spine and with faint scratches to front panel and a fingernail-size chip to bottom edge of rear panel. Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Piney Trigger (the daughter) boasts of being one even into extreme old age.

Epilogue: Though not marked off as an epilogue (the book has no chapter divisions), the last couple of pages consist of a series of descriptions of what happened to various characters afterward. John Masefield’s classic children’s book is considered to be one of the great works of modern children’s fiction. Pastedowns, endpapers and most of the pages are also foxed in places, with a dampstain noted on page 239. Oracular Head: The coven uses a Brazen Head that can see into the past in an attempt to locate the treasure. Deserted Island: What with all the mutinies and maroonings, the history of the treasure includes several, each more bleak and inhospitable than the one before.

John Masefield’s much-loved 1920s children’s book about a boy who must fight dark magic to uncover his family’s treasure. The Box of Delights is now an established Christmas favourite and as much a part of the season as Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. We are invited to empathize with Benjamin the highwayman – ‘a slight, quick man, with a nice face,’ Ellen has heard, ‘nothing bad in it, only bold’ – and the horse shot from beneath him in the final desperate chase, and with Bitem the fox, who also knows a thing or two about being hunted. Character Overlap: Abner Brown previously appeared as a henchman of the villain (also a black magician) in Sard Harker. Many of the wild animals he meets also seem to be named after their species, as Bat, Otter, Water Rat, etc.

Epilogue includes a couple of lapses into first-person, indicating that the author lives in the neighbourhood where the novel is set and has met (or, in the case of the fox, had his poultry raided by) some of the characters. Dispatched ROYAL MAIL FIRST CLASS with TRACKING next working day or sooner securely boxed in cardboard. It is as if a lost boy had conjured his longed-for childhood back to life through sheer force of imagination. Will Kay and the midnight folk be in time to save the long-lost family treasure from falling into the hands of Abner Brown and a tribe of witches known as the Pouncer Seven?
