About this deal

Before your 31 fully settles upon the pile, your chum slams down the 32 on top of it and every cell in your brain is electric. The Mind is a newly-released cooperative card game from publisher Nurnberger-Spielkarten-Verlag (NSV) and designer Wolfgang Warsch.

It brings a single mechanism to the table and offers a few restrictions that result in a fantastic trick. The player with the lowest numbered card places their card face up, and each player will place cards increasing in number. We’ve played ‘The Mind’ 10 times or so and really enjoy the development of synchronization between the players and the game overall.

With such an elegant balance of mechanics working together, you will be curious why it took so long for something like this to come into existence.

This gesture is used throughout the game and key because the pauses you leave are important and everyone needs to be on the same page that you are starting. At any point during a level, a player can suggest that a throwing star be played - this is signaled by raising a hand. In the first round (level 1) each player receives 1 card, in the second round (level 2) they receive 2 cards, and so on. Regardless of how many there are (it might be one player with one card, it might be multiple players with multiple cards), those are slide under the active played card and you lose a bunny.

Start proceedings by separating the Star and Bunny cards equal to the number of participants and deal these out. It takes less than 5 minutes to teach and, in my experience, you rarely only play one game once it gets going. In each case, the reward is depicted in the bottom right corner of the level card (1 life or 1 throwing star). I found myself getting pulled into the belief that you can synchronise and harmonise with your fellow players. It’s nearly impossible to predict where you will land until you try the game; my own skepticism was shattered almost immediately. This is a step by step guide for how to play The Mind the popular cooperative number strategy and communication card game. It is this unusual gameplay and unnerving interaction that grabbed the attention of many when it was released. All 100 number cards are shuffled again and each player is dealt the relevant number of cards, as determined by the new level.

Timing is everything in The Mind , and how well you judge the internal clock of your other players will determine whether you’re successful. You may start the game believing you don't stand a chance - but then you find some sort of cerebral rhythmic connection with your fellow players, and progress further than your collective wildest dream!

The Nerd Cantina Show has been a fantastic experience and we thank anyone who has listened, supported, or joined in on the conversations. The design and mechanics of The Mind are essentially there to facilitate interesting player connection and interaction.
