The plot sags at times, stretching credibility with a fast-arriving fleet of characters who look exactly like other characters (casting the movie will be easy), building toward a slightly overwrought ending leavened by the tang of psychological ambiguity. The book starts off well as we meet all the characters and fall into the world of all things 'beautiful'.

Almost two years later and she still has not got over her survivor's guilt, and blames herself every day for her sister's demise. The breakthrough was a Marie Claire novel competition in 2013 where she submitted the first three chapters of a contemporary manuscript she had written. The ending is rather abrupt, as per some reviewers noting, but I felt this was perhaps a suggestion that there was more to come from Abi.Let’s put it this way- It did not keep me on my toes but admittedly I just did not care enough to try and keep up. I also noticed the different reactions from people towards Abi and her mental health problems – past and present. When Abi goes to Ben he sides with his sister and Abi doesn't know who to turn to and if she can get out alive. Taut writing, brilliant characterisation and a clever, unpredictable plot makes this an unmissable thriller.

This novel apparently won the Marie Claire Debut Novel Award; one wonders – well, I do anyway – what the others were like. I was obsessed with Everyone Here Is Lying and read it in less than two days, desperate to know what had happened to Avery Wooler. Douglas second love was psychology since she loves understanding the motivations and drives of people.

Before she got started writing novels, she was a journalist and worked for the likes of “Take-A-Break,” a woman’s magazine where she wrote true life features. Tense, compulsive, atmospheric and emotional, with two wonderful lead characters and an original plot that had me hooked from beginning to end. When Abi meets the beautiful, vivacious and outspoken Beatrice and soon after her twin brother Ben, she begins to think that they are what is missing from her life since Lucy's death. Bea has a huge transformation in the book and by the end, it’s almost as if she’s not the bubbly, sweet, friendly girl we meet right at the beginning. Her second and third novels, LOCAL GIRL MISSING and LAST SEEN ALIVE (Penguin), are Sunday Times bestsellers. I have, at the time of writing, read three Claire Douglas books and would particularly recommend The Couple at No 9 and The Girls Who Disappeared. After a tragic accident, still haunted by her twin sister’s death, Abi is making a fresh start in Bath. This is the 30th book, but considering Alex has survived "Kill Alex Cross" before, chances are he survives this one.Where Abi keeps being haunted by her twin Lucy she thinks she has seen her sister but it is someone handing out flyers who makes and sells jewellery at her house. For example, some of the other characters assuming Abi (the main character), is the one in the wrong or the one who’s confused because of her MH problems.
