In Year 5, we have written newspaper articles about the bizarre disappearance of the girl through the magical doorway which suddenly appears in her room.

I bought it from my kids school book fair, neither of them (7 and 5) were very interested in it even after I purchased it and read it to them at home, I guess I prefer for them to love cheerful, colorful books with unicorns and rainbows. There is, however, one varmint who clings to the past, caring for a small potted plant in his small apartment. A crew of 35 people worked in three countries over a two year period to make the film, and an original score by Icelandic composer Johann Johannsson and sound design by Adrian Rhodes complete the picture. Once, the only sounds to be heard were the buzzing of bees in the grass, the murmuring of moles in the earth, and the song of birds in the sky.

Spelling Seeds have been designed to complement Writing Roots by providing weekly, contextualised sequences of sessions for the teaching of spelling that include open-ended investigations and opportunities to practise and apply within meaningful and purposeful contexts, linked (where relevant) to other areas of the curriculum and a suggestion of how to extend the investigation into home learning. I couldn't actually interest any children in this book, but most of the adults I shared it with, thanked me for sharing this precious jewel that I discovered at the library. Perfect to add to your bank of creative writing activities on this popular text, and as grammar revision in one, this resource encourages children to invent their own expanded noun phrases based on thought-provoking images. While the text is self-consciously elliptical, one thing is clear: the blame lies with ‘Others’ who ‘came one day’ from outside, the ‘varmints’ (a variant, we are told, of the word vermin), with THEM.

The typography is simple yet so effective and it allows children to concentrate on the delightful illustrations throughout. I recommend this film for all animation lovers and all those who want to watch a very emotional film in 24 minutes. We thought about other animals that were under threat of extinction and wrote from their perspective, e. But someone is nurturing a little piece of wilderness, and at the right time takes it to the right place.
