About this deal

On larger tracks an intermediate level of zoom would be preferred and trying to follow this type of navigational line I find difficult when cycling with ANY device using the same method. Apart from the hand-cover sensor (you put your hand over the display and the backlight comes on) there is just one large control button below the screen. However, it’s easy to see the important information when you’re running, and the watch vibrates when selecting options, so you always know when you’ve selected something when running. The monochrome screen is clear and helps with light or dark viewing at a glance, which is ideal for running. The plastic strap is easy to put on and adjust, although having to remove the watch to charge it is annoying.

There’s the USB charging cradle and standard USB cable to charge the headphones as well as spare ear bud covers. You can even set which of these zones you’d like to be in during your session and the Spark will help to keep you there throughout by buzzing on your wrist when you’re not putting in enough effort. The display is a simple map you can zoom in on, rather than full turn-by-turn navigation, but it’s enough to get you around.

The Runner 3/Spark 3 is probably not the best choice for a 5-times-a-week super-serious runner into their stats nor for the multi-sport triathlete in need of power meter functionality on their bike.

Another major flaw is not being able to review recorded data history through the app if the watch has no battery. Really most of you will only want to either pair to the MySports smartphone app or link to MySports on your computer (www. All this adds up to a complete package that doesn’t require either a chest strap or smartphone for use. While tracking of position via GPS and optical heart rate monitoring are both impressive and work well, there’s little to be done with that data. You can plan interval sessions, or set the Spark 3 to buzz every time you stop running at a certain pace or exit a given heart rate zone.

TomTom Spark 3 review: TomTom’s last running watch is still

Indeed my suggestion is to work solely on playlists as the Runner 3/Spark 3 effectively does not recognise any form of album/artist/song file structure that you might drag onto it. Interesting Fact: Even with a-GPS (for all vendors) you will often get a more accurate GPS track if you first acquire a GPS signal and then sync online.

The good thing is that most of these services will also pull through the heart rate data as well as the usual running data metrics. GPX route support, I just jumped online and used PlotARoute to generate a predetermined distance based on my starting point, which can also be a circuit.

While TomTom's own app has been vastly improved, you can export activity data to a host of third party apps including Nike+, Runkeeper and Strava. The Spark 3, like the original Spark, houses one of the best optical heart rate monitors we've tested.
