About this deal

Moments before he completes his routine, Socrates is in his thoughts asking him three questions: "Where are you, Dan?

It is very inspiring to read this story, because it shows how one person could see what his mistakes were, learn how to fix them, fix them and then become a brand new man. At a car-service station, he encounters an old man who seems to know more about Dan's problem than Dan himself knows, whom Dan later nicknames "Socrates". In your deluded belief that you are this 'mind' or 'spirit' or 'soul', you find the escape clause in your contract with mortality. The mind is an incessant internal narrative of images, sounds and feelings which act to distract you from the only thing that exists; the here and now. It shows how young people can often that they have full control over their lives when in fact they have no control over anything.Probably the most important is how to keep getting back up when life knocks you down and how to continue to follow your dreams, even after your world is shattered. Awakened by dark dreams one night, Dan found himself at a gas station with an old man named Socrates, and his world was changed forever. i'm not particularly sold on Zen, though i suppose there are some basic Life Lessons you could glean from this novel: detach yourself from the need to acquire worldly goods, remember we're all part of everything else, etc. I didn't get from it what other people have, but I enjoyed it enough to read more of Dan Millman's books in the future. They share various encounters and spiritual experiences, which Dan can’t absorb, and from the perspective of personhood, he is unable to dig deep into his own self and find the real core of existence.

Some basic tenets of eastern philosophy are poorly communicated through writing which is self-indulgent, overly dramatic, predictable, cliche and amateurish. Socrates makes the final test, by taking Dan to a cave with an idea to examine his willingness to live the life of a warrior. One is insight, the willing of attention, the channeling of awareness to focus precisely on what you want to see. Socrates talks to Dan about Satori, a Zen concept that refers to the state of being present in the moment. In retrospect I noticed he was a lot calmer than usual, but I didn't make any connection between that and the book he gave me. The book The Way of The Peaceful Warrior is a story of how a man named Dan Millman became a "warrior".

He came to me shortly after the event and told me he had something for me while reaching into his backpack. Socrates prompts Dan to learn from life’s experiences and free himself from the impulses that control him. When you learn to make proper use of your anger, you can change fear and sorrow to anger, then turn anger to action.

Publisher; "Is it a Bereavement book, an autobiography, an inspirational book, a spiritual journey book, a travel book, a self-discovery book or what?

These lessons are conveyed through practical lessons, long contemplation, and one spectacular mystical experience.Out of his bag he pulled out a beat up copy of `Way of the Peaceful Warrior', handed it to me with a smile, and said `I never give my books to anyone, but I want you to have this'. As a mother I found myself wondering how he could abandon his daughter so easily and not rate her a mention in his life. To be honest, I can't even understand how Millman could get this piece of balderdash (yes, I just used that word for the first time in my life! It’s not the abstract, sterile world of a book, now it’s inside, in the flesh, the bones, the blood. If you knew for certain that you had a terminal illness - if you had precious little time left to make use of your life and consider who you are, you'd not waste time on self-indulgence or fear, lethargy or ambition.
