About this deal

The second YA novel from multi-award-winning Danielle Jawando, perfect for fans of Angie Thomas, Gayle Foreman, Jennifer Niven and Nikesh Shukla. Also with Jackson’s trail and case I found myself finding similarities between the Stephen Lawrence case, things such and the institutional racism and how the victims were treated like criminals when they were purely victims. Most importantly, however, When Our Worlds Collided is a story you certainly won’t forget in a hurry.

Those sitting in judgement are white, privileged and simply unable to envisage living in fear because of the colour of their skin. What follows flips their worlds upside down and makes Chantelle, Jackson, and Marc question the deep-rooted prejudice and racism that exists within the police, the media, and the rest of society. When three Black teenagers in Manchester find themselves the only helpers after a violent crime in brings them together in ways they didn't expect. Anyways the plot did pick up once Jackson was wronged but otherwise it was just an okay book, sorry. It is a coming of age tale about what it means to be black in America and how deeply rooted racism in society corrupts young minds; they are taught to judge first, and ask questions later.

I've always found it incredible that some people could still be so credulous in the '60's and that it appears the opposite is usually true nowadays. At a young age, he had already gone through hardship and a heavy childhood upbringing that made him end up in foster care. Jawando’s sensitive writing and nuanced characters provide an important space for Black teenagers from a range of backgrounds to feel seen and validated. Definitely a book that will make you angry at injustice and oppression and institutional racism but of course there is always hope.Or rather, the trauma from the initial event was progressing as I imagine it would but, the events in the middle hit me so I hard I was genuinely shocked. Jackson, another young guy, who's been afforded many opportunities by the aspirations and wealth of his parents, cushioned from the reality of prejudice to an extent until he finds himself at the scene of the stabbing. Her previous publications include the non-fiction children's book Maya Angelou (Little Guides to Great Lives), the short stories Paradise 703 (longlisted for the Finishing Line Press Award) and The Deerstalker (selected as one of six finalists for the We Need Diverse Books short story competition), as well as several short plays performed in Manchester and London.

Ms Edwards was a complete tool and as an educator myself, I hated her with a passion but I know people like her exist which is, I guess, why I hated her so much.

Him finally telling his parents what he really wanted to do in life was a good scene too, I actually really liked how his relationship with them was written.
