About this deal

A connecting flight to Reykjavik followed by a journey across the tundra with sufficient four-wheel-drive turbulence to make his insides feel as though they’d been tumbled by an industrial dryer. This means we have the opportunity of meeting all of the various allies and friends who have helped him out through the course of the previous 7 books.

Thus the reappearance of his nemesis, Special Agent in Charge Naomi Templeton, and her tense meeting with President Victoria Donahue-Carr, who has sometimes targeted, sometimes allied with Evan in the past, depending on the circumstances.Though he managed to stay under the radar for a while, the government has found him and given him an ultimatum: Kill a powerful man of face the consequences. This one is for those who love X, action-packed pacing, good vs evil, and plenty of hold your breath fighting. Their friendship was a joy to watch and despite Joey being a tough, independent young woman, her more vulnerable moments really warmed my cold heart. Here, the conceit is that Evan Smoak (aka Orphan X) is such a former assassin, plucked from foster care by a CIA-type agency and trained in secret to save the world one assassination at a time. Evan’s backstory is lengthy and complex; Hurwitz shrewdly paints in primary colors and keeps the action moving.

The last survivor of the off-the-books programme that raised and trained him, Evan Smoak was sent around the world to do his government's dirty work. In The Last Orphan Evan’s pardon has come into question, because as we know, he hasn’t exactly lived up to his end of the bargain he made with the President. Going from a mostly lonely existence to inadvertently and reluctantly adding these people to his life has been heartwarming! Brooks is a pro at building suspense even if it plays out in some rather spectacularly yucky episodes, one involving a short spear that takes its name from “the sucking sound of pulling it out of the dead man’s heart and lungs. After he intervened on someone’s behalf as the Nowhere Man, the only payment he requested was that that person pass on his untraceable phone number—1-855-2-NOWHERE—to someone else in need of help.

I also felt that in this volume, the relationship between Joey Morales and Evan went to a deep familial connection heretofore unreached and I AM HERE FOR IT. Evan took another sip of the limited-edition batch he’d traveled over four thousand miles to sample. As I progressed through the series I became more and more invested in these characters, and this installment plays upon those feelings. So, overall I liked the idea of the plot and the ongoing story of Evan Smoke, and I find the composition to be of a high standard, but the experience as a whole left me feeling underwhelmed. Taken from an orphanage at twelve, Evan entered a government's covert "Orphan" program trained to kill America's enemies. He is captured by one of the only two honorable characters in the book, the true-blue FBI Agent Naomi Templeton who willingly tosses out her convictions and loyalty to the law to help him kill the lobbyist. When he remade himself as The Nowhere Man, dedicated to helping the most desperate in their times of trouble, Evan found himself slowly back on the government's radar. In a show of aggressive amusement, one of the footballers pounded his fist into the bar, sending a glass ashtray flipping up past Evan’s cheek. However, the plot is now circling back and recycling the President thing and a few other other themes I wont reveal.

Having eliminated most of the Orphans in the program, the government will stop at nothing to eliminate the threat they see in Evan. Smoak is lured into a meticulously laid trap, the jaws of which are a heavily-armed counter-assault team, air support, a fleet of tactical vehicles and more firepower than brought down Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. He poured it down his tree-trunk throat and smashed the glass on the floor, roaring until cords stood out in his neck. Now the President has him in her control and offers Evan a deal - eliminate a rich, powerful man she says is too dangerous to live and, in turn, she'll let Evan survive. And five of his colleagues, found in various states of disassembly in a barn at the foot of the Námafjall Mountains. We learn about Kate’s possibly stalling career and Leo’s plan to apply to acting schools against his mother’s wishes. There's no doubt in my mind that these incredible tales of heroics are getting better with each iteration.
