Absolute Sandman is heavy literature in the literal way, I stopped reading every time holding up the book started to hurt. In the tavern arc, each story is drawn in a very different style, some of them I loved, they could almost tell the story with no words, some were more normal comics style, some were creepy, but they fitted the stories being told. In comparison to the previous two Absolute Sandman volumes, the focus of this one is the regular story tather than the miscellany at the finale. Indeed, Death gets the quote of the arc (and possibly her best quote of the whole collection) when she responds to a dead person complaining about not having enough time – she assures him that he got what everyone gets, “you got a lifetime”. Still, for an arc centred on Dream and the Endless, it did very little (except for the conclusion, which I knew would have repercussions).
