Description

Jesus is “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Jesus is the way to heaven, the embodiment of truth, and the way to eternal life. Jesus came proclaiming truth and living truth out for us to see and follow. Being like Jesus involves living out and proclaiming His truth. First aid help and a medical man if possible to be on or near the hotel in case of need. Accidents were frequent but nothing was ever done (except by the staff). Now it would mean the employer’s expense.

An eight-hour day, one day off duty a week, one week’s holiday a year, all holidays paid for. This was the last demand, a very important one. We are God’s workmanship (Eph. 2:10). God is working in us (Philippians 2:13). We are who we are by God’s grace (1 Cor. 15:10). We need to be empowered by the Holy Spirit if we are to act on behalf of God (Acts 1:4-5, 8; Luke 11:13; Acts 2 and onward). We can only dare to be a Daniel and follow that course if we are enabled by God. We need to seek God’s enabling. If we are to take advantage of God’s opportunities, we must experience His enabling. Seventh, to dare to be a Daniel means to share with others what God reveals to you – Daniel 2:29. Daniel did not shy away from sharing God’s message with someone who was in a powerful position. As all staff were human beings, all were workers, no one must think or treat the other as dirt beneath them. This was aimed at the management, office staff, head waiters, head porters, head chambermaid etc. VERY much of our future life will depend upon our earliest days. I like a remark of Mr. Buskin’s, that I remember to have read, though I cannot quote it verbatim. He says, “People often say, ‘We excuse the thoughtlessness of youth,’” but he says, “No, it never ought to be excused. I had far rather hear of thoughtless old age, when a man has done his work; but what excuse can be found for a thoughtless youth? The time for thought is at the beginning of life, and there is no period which so much demands, or so much necessitates, thoughtfulness as our early days.” I would that all young men would think so. They say that they must sow their “wild oats.” No, no; my dear young friend, think before you sow such seed as that, and remember what the reaping will be. See whether there is not better corn to be found than wild oats, and try to sow that. Then think how you will sow it, and when you will sow it; for, if you do not think about the sowing,— And I’m sure that those memories are still fresh in your mind – where you were, what you were doing, how you felt – disbelief, anger, and that sense that things are out of control. He gave God credit and did not take credit for what God did through him. Daniel was humble and therefore useable to God. Daniel served Almighty God and therefore, when he shared God with others that Almighty nature of God came through.

The fact that we must read the Bible in a way that pays attention to its human examples is not mere speculation. The warrant for reading the Bible this way can be seen in the numerous ways the New Testament itself uses exemplary figures from the Old Testament. Hebrews 11: in this chapter the author recounts for us over twenty examples of believers in the Old Testament who had faith in God and thus "received their commendation" (11:2). Genuine faith is what made Abel's sacrifice, rather than Cain's, acceptable to God (11:4); faith led Noah to build, and eventually enter, the ark and thus be saved from God's judgment (11:7); faith taught Abraham to look away from the things of this world and to fix his eyes on "the city that has foundations" (11:10), that is, on the heavenly inheritance that God had prepared for him; faith caused Moses to leave the luxuries of Pharaoh's court, which are described as "the fleeting pleasures of sin" (11:25), because "he considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt" (11:26). It was just about this time that various Anarchist groups were formed in many parts of London with their paper Freedom, edited by Tom Keel. Many times I went to The Grove, Hammersmith, and Willesden, to speak and to learn. I knew governments exist by force in the interest of the ruling class. Freedom is the only thing worth fighting for, all else is illusion. Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself in this way. 9 Now God had caused the official to show favour and sympathy to Daniel, 10 but the official told Daniel, "I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men of your age? The king would then have my head because of you." Craft unions are and must always remain powerless. The boss, the State, the trade union official, have the power. Tom Cann’s union was national, not international. He ignored thousands of foreign catering workers. He had one walk-out strike and failed. The Transport & General Workers’ Union, Catering Section, has not even had that. It just draws the subs of its few members, and does nothing. As with these few unions, so with the whole British trade union movement. What should we do with all of those figures in the Bible who have done mighty deeds in the service of God? What, if anything, can we learn from them? Should we ever ask the questions "What would David do?""What would Joshua do?""What would Paul do?" Even: "What would Jesus do?" This is the first thing we should do when we find ourselves in a worldly situation or environment. We should begin with a commitment to holiness. We need to start with a commitment to stay true to God. We need to accept our life purpose from God; to live for Him. The majority of Jewish exiles probably reasoned this way. The majority usually does reason like that. Using their misguided "common sense," they rationalized themselves right out of the will of God (Daniel 1:4-7).
