Is the speaker therefore using ‘Paris’ as a metaphor for love or lost love too ? We have to wait and see how this voice untangles his tale..and of course there is no guarantee the speaker is male..we never know the identities or genders of either the I or the you…this makes the poem open to all sorts of possible sexual intimacies.. of brushing against Tatiana—the crowd was pressed tight together as everyone pushed toward the exit— If a book could articulate love perfectly, then this is it! For clarification, I don't read poetry. I don't really enjoy it. I'd rather read a book for what it is than try to dissect every line for the clues it has to offer. But this. THIS! This was so interesting yet so clever and extremely funny. However the casual, careless voice who dismisses all the sights of Paris and draws attention to their apparently ‘sleazy’ hotel room, gradually becomes physically involved with the mysterious ‘you’ and things become more interesting. it is almost as if the early ‘you’ is really not the ‘you’ in the room but the ‘you’ in his past, still very much present in his/her mind.The apparently tatty surrounds could be a sign of their economic spending or could be teh way he sees their room as ‘sleazy’ as they know they are not in love with this companion and feel it to be sleazy…. I was born in Paris in 1989 and though I started to read children’s books pretty early, I somehow never stopped. As a result, I’ve become a writer, reader and student of children’s literature. I’ve now been living and studying in Cambridge (UK) for seven years and have become a doctor. Well, not the type that saves people’s lives. The type that scribbles ‘PhD’ after their name and rambles on about beauty, truth and the value of (all) literature. Worth striving for, I think! More about my academic work here. Such a sweet satisfying story of love and loss... both Tatiana and Eugene were likable and a little quirky.... The story really transported you to Paris, you could see the sights, hear the sounds, and smell the scents of the city... a cleverly told love story... I’m not sure I could read every book in verse, but it was nice for a little change of pace...

Looking for something different

My favorite character by a mile is Tatiana! She's raw and her personality is great in this book. However, the love interest Eugene is kind of a jerk. He's not interesting, he's just boring and rude. Je l'avais emprunté un peu par hasard, j'avais vu quelques bons avis, et puis je m'étais rendu compte qu'il s'agissait d'un roman en vers. N'étant pas sure de l'apprécier, je l'avais donc mit un peu de côté. Overall, I love In Paris With You! It is not your typical romance book. I highly recommend it if you love contemporary books! This is one of the most important questions you can ask of any text. When you read this poem, you notice an ‘I’ is speaking. They are a first person narrator telling their own ‘story.’ This does not necessarily mean that they are speaking the truth of course. Sometimes first person narrators are very UNRELIABLE and FALLIBLE.As we all are! But the ending drove me nuts. It reminded me of the movie “Love Rosie”. That we-are-both-in-love-with-each-other-but-won’t-dare-to-admit-it-lest-we-get-hurt trope. One in which makes me annoyed to no end. I just can’t relate holding in such feelings and emotions like that for so long. It just feels stupid to me and I only ever come across such stupidity as a means to dramatise books/movies. But hey that’s just me.

Phrases make poem seem down to earth. Such language contrasts with falsely poetic tone often found in literature about love, replacing to comic effect. Even though the book starts in the present, a good half of the book occurs 10 years before. The novel is all about first teenage love and speaks to everyone who has ever been in love. Ten years later Eugene and Tatiana meet again, and suddenly Eugene understands what he lost so many years ago and what might slip again through his fingers if he doesn't grip this second chance with both hands. This story was told in verse, it took a wild to get used to the style, but once I did I was completely entranced... The book was also translated from French, I can only imagine how difficult it was to translate such a stylized book, so major props to the translator! As much as I enjoyed this story, I do recognize that the style is not for everybody.... but told in verse or not this was a lovely love story set in the city of love, Paris... But I am in Paris with you.’The anticlimax is deliberately flat in tone. The romance of Paris and the intimacy of the second person pronoun ‘you’ is bathetic due to the qualification of the preposition ‘ But’. This is a compromise and compromising relationship. There is no romantic idealism or excitement here…And yet it was interesting for Eugene, who had hardly ever experienced this kind of feeling before,
