Jacques Gernet (31 May 1996). A History of Chinese Civilization. Cambridge University Press. pp.339–. ISBN 978-0-521-49781-7. Unsurprisingly the creator of the map, being a European, put Europe front and centre of the Mercator projection, much in the same way as China did for the Kunyu World Map. Newly discovered materials reveal personal networks among intellectuals of southern China, centered in Qingyuan ( Ningbo). Qingjun, who was from neighboring Taizhou, created the Hunyi Jiangli Tu when he stayed in Qingyuan. Wu Sidao, who left an important bibliographic clue, was also from Qingyuan. In addition, Ningbo was one of the most important seaports and the sea routes were extended to Fuzhou and Guangzhou, and Southeast Asia, Japan and Goryeo. They must have acquired marine information from Muslim sailors. But, there have been some notable attempts that are beginning to be embraced instead of the Mercator projection. The Shengjiao Guangbei Tu was a world map. It contained not only China but also Africa and Europe. Luo's copy and the Daming Hunyi Tu suggest that the original depicted India more accurately than the Korean adaptation although it is also possible that the Daming Hunyi Tu reflects 17th century knowledge.

However, China is not alone in its claims. The Pacific Ocean is a rough-and-tumble neighborhood and everyone wants in on the action. China is joined by a whole gaggle of other Asian countries (Brunei, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia, to name a few) in contesting bits and pieces of the South China Sea.

This article needs to be updated. The reason given is: what happened after the Cultural revolution? that was around 50 years ago. Please help update this to reflect recent events or newly available information. ( June 2019) All of these concerns are understandable. But does the map actually indicate everything that people seem to think it does? sovereign states are members of the United Nations, the world's largest intergovernmental organization. [ 2]

Two other points of geographical contention that help shape modern Chinese world maps are the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands. A second possible meaning is a maritime jurisdiction delineation of some kind – a claim to authority not only over the land features within the line, but the waters as well. This was the meaning that the UNCLOS Arbitration Tribunal rejected.Compared to world maps today, the Kunyu World Map does have some distortions, but it is a good representation of the known geography at the time. Since the passage in 2002 of the Surveying and Mapping Law of the People's Republic of China, it has been illegal for foreigners—as well as any unregistered entity—to privately gather GPS data in China. There is an ancient Chinese legend called He Bo Xian Tu ( 河伯獻圖), which roughly means "the River Deity presenting a map". During the mythical Xia dynasty, a river deity gave Yu the Great a stone with a flood map etched on its surface. Yu the Great used the map to help him in taming the flood that threatened to destroy rural agriculture.

This map is considered to be one of the best world maps and is promoted by the United Nations as well as socially concerned groups such as Oxfam, it is also widely used in British schools. The People's Republic of China country map helps you look up information about the contiguous position, boundaries, and topography of China in detail. What, then, has the Chinese government done in response to the international outcry? It has essentially told everyone to calm down and view the map in an “ objective and rational way .” It has offered no substantive defense of any particular interpretation whatsoever. The aim, clearly, is to maintain a studied ambiguity and two-way plausible deniability. Finally, according to Chinese law, maritime entitlements project from baselines as determined by specified fixed geographical points. China has (dubiously) specified points and baselines for the Paracel Islands, but not for any of the other features in the South China Sea, and certainly none that would correspond to any nine- or ten-dash line. Logically, then, this U-shaped line cannot denote a maritime entitlement. Contrary to what rival claimant states appear to believe, it is not the 2009 nine-dash line.

The national map is an annual production that could be released any time, and China knows well that its claims are contentious, even though they are not new.If you have an iPhone, using Apple Maps is your best bet. The app works in China, and the maps are based on Alibaba’s cutting-edge technology. Monaco is located on the French Riviera. Monaco is .75 square miles, which is equivalent to two square kilometres.
